My younger brother and I are the products of the public school system in Arlington. My younger sister went to Nolan. Can you guess who is a blue collar hammer swinger in the oilfields? Me and my brother. She is very well to do because of her successful business ventures all on her own.

I'd say that her private school college prep did her well.

Maybe she would have gotten just as far with the public education. Not knocking your job, because there's not a damn thing wrong with it. That said, I don't think people can blame public schools for the job they end up with. I went to Arlington public schools until I graduated high school. Never went to day of college. Had a few pretty lame jobs, but I do okay now. "Okay" is relative, but I see lot of people with private school educations and fancy college degrees who might never do as well. As someone else mentioned, it all comes down to the character of the individual. You can be hugely successful with a basic public education, or you can be a broke ass beggar with a college degree, like the chick in the original post.

I feel for her, but she is a bit of an idiot at continuing to try to scrape by in the most expensive city in the west, when she could switch gears, move out to the midwest, and do just fine. That being said, there are a few things are at work here :

1) A poor job of national leaders at being a champion for technical jobs that are sorely needed. It's just been a collective push to get everyone into college, whether needed or even qualified to go.
2) Blue Collar workers desiring better lives for their kids by sending them to college for nicer white collar jobs, only to have those jobs be absolute garbage as older workers keep working at the top of their careers. There are only so many new jobs created every year, with a shitload more people entering the workforce, so it just pushes down wages as less are leaving the workforce, or are leaving later than anticipated.

3) CEO and top executive pay has skyrocketed since the early 90s, but average worker pay has flatlined since the late 90s.
4) Poorly educated kids who dont really understand how the economy works and what job skills are valuable. This is not the kids fault, thank the folks who set curriculum for that.

There is an incredible amount of real frustration out there that's being really misdirected , but ignoring that its not real frustration at how the middle class is being squeezed out will end up seeing a socialist in office if you just ignore it as silly.

I knew a guy who went to SMU for his MBA and he EXPECTED to graduate and immediately get a six figure income right out the gate. Reality said differently.
