HOUSTON -- The son of a beating victim was charged with murder Wednesday after shooting and killing his mom's attacker.

Police arrested 18-year-old Treveon Jones hours after the shooting outside a busy Fifth Ward gas station on Collingsworth.

Jones fired nearly 20 shots from an assault rifle and killed 40-year-old Frederick Wallace, according to police.

Witnesses say Wallace had been beating Jones' mother in front of her three young children.

After the barrage of gunfire, Wallace crashed into a tree.

“I said, 'He must be drunk cause he on the wrong side of the road,'" said "D." "She said, ‘No baby, that was gunshots. That’s the one that got shot up.’”

“I said ‘damn.’ I called the paramedics, I called 911. He was still alive," said "D."

Assault rifles are semi automatic, you have to pull the trigger to fire each round. I am no expert, but 20 rounds sounds like maybe he had to change magazines too.

Technically assault rifles are automatic, but the media likes to label any long gun as an assault riffle or assault-type rifles.

An assault rifle (military M16s, AK47s, etc) is select fire; an assault weapon (AR15, civilian AK47s) is semiautomatic. The media and most politicians don't understand the difference, though.

And it's perfectly legal to own magazines with capacities greater than 20 rounds in Texas.

Sounds justified to me. Hopefully in liberal houston he lucks out and gets good judge wih sense if the DA presses charges. Hopefully him being taken in is just procedure to get things figured out and he is on his way soon back home.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I don't think this was justified at all. The dude was driving off when he opened fire. This was an execution.

I tend to agree.. Understandable but not justifiable. There was no threat to her life when her son shot him.

DA should offer a plea with little or no jail time, IMO.
