When I let mine get pretty long (more than an inch or so) I use shampoo and conditioner. Other than that I just brush it with a boar bristle paddle brush a couple of times a day (morning and at some point after getting home). Once you get it 'trained' it tends to look better.
Matt was spot on too, as far as trimming it to the shape you want. Because I shave my head, I tend to keep the sides of my beard thinner, and thicker in the center. When I use clippers I start with a longer guide in the middle and reduce as I move outside then taper it even more as I get to the top of my sideburns. I do that about once a month. I clean up the neck line with clippers about every two weeks.
