Originally posted by DennyFor the most part, the curriculum will be in line with public schools (which is slightly above crap). The teacher to student ratio is usually less. That is a plus. The bad part is that some of the students are there because they were kicked out of the public school they were at in the first place.
It's really just a gamble. I think it works out for the better more times than not.

No two charter schools will be the same unless they're under the same umbrella of ownership. You'll have to check into each one and see how it looks. A lot of it will depend on how good your public school is in your area. We had the option of sending our daughter to a pretty good charter school that was close to us before she started kindergarten, so I decided to give them a call and ask for a tour of the place.
Boy am I glad I did.
There was no way in hell I was going to send any of my kids to that charter school. Their academics may be pretty good, but once I saw the school itself, jesus they packed kids in like sardines. In kindergarten the little kids seemed to have enough room in the classroom, but when you moved up to like 4th grade level, the room was the same size with about the same number of kids. The kids literally had their desks right next to one another. I asked how they take tests if they're so close. The teacher said they have to put up little cardboard partitions. There was one small 2'x3' window. The cafeteria was the size of maybe 3 of those classrooms; the library 2. The professional staff like the secretaries up front seemed aloof, like even the most basic questions they had to really think hard about. They just seemed to be there for a paycheck and pension.
So, we sent her to the public school was rated the same academically and had room to actually breathe inside; we've been very happy. Like I said it's going to depend on the options available in your area.

you cant beat small town schools. our godson has only 11 kids in his class. you can track everything daily . a big plus is no hoodrats in the school of any color . small towns just dont put up with it. charter schools are a great idea but like stated above they end up over crowded. in public schools teachers hands are tied . our fucking government interferes so much they can not teach. all they can do is teach them how to take a test. best thing you can do is get your kidos into a small school and stay involved.

Can you just go to a charter school? Isn't there some sort of acceptance process?Originally posted by davbrucasI want to like Slow99 since people I know say he's a good guy, but just about everything he posts is condescending and passive aggressive.
Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?
You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

What are you looking for in a school? A lower student:teacher ratio? Different demographics? Athletics programs? A place where teachers are held accountable for the kids' progress?
My kids now go to a small town school after moving them out of the Arlington ISD. It was the best decision we made with regards to school.
I also work for a charter school...which one are you considering?
