  • When did scrap prices tank ?

GEEEEZ. I haul my metal shorts and scraps about once a year. we're finishing a remodel and I had an old stove and microwave and some shorts. Not much, just 300 lbs. . They're only paying 2 Cents a pound. Holy cow. Barely covered the gas bill over there.

It wasn't two cents a couple years ago though! It used to bounce between 7-8 cents a pound at the local scrap yard for scrap iron/"shred", and I'd take stuff from time to time. Aluminum cans were 60-70 cents, and cast aluminum wheels were always about 10 cents more. I hadn't been in 8-10 months, and took some stuff in December, and that's when I got 2 cents for scrap and 40 cents for aluminum cans.

Yeah, was wondering if I was the only one hating scrap/alum pricing. I'm just keeping a pile of it all until it recovers. Even if 5 years - I'll just have a bigger pile stashed out back. A few months ago I took almost a 12' trailer full of crushed alum cans and got around 23 dollars. (maybe it was 27)

Either way, I'm just going to hold on to all my junk awhile.

            Fuel prices

When oil tanks, new steel/scrap tank. .2/lbs is pretty low, call around next time. Just scrapped a truck load and it paid 3.5/lbs still awful, but far better than .2/lbs. This happened last time oil tanked. Great time to buy steel though, if you're planning on building something now's the time.

prices really started to tank a little over a year ago

We take a lot of electric motors and they were paying .25/lb....2 weeks ago when we went it was only .11/lb

What's lead going for? I have about 400-500 lbs of pure lead wheel weights.

That seems like a lot of effort for nothing.

china was buying up all the shred that they could get, and when they tanked most building stopped over there, and that killed scrap prices.

Everything has been on the decline for a while now.
I was making a killing when I was getting $3/lb for copper, now that it's paying a $1.40/lb the profit on scrap just isn't what it used to be.
