Props to Harris Methodist... They got their shit together on this stroke thing.

You're younger than I am, so you're still a kid.

Agreed...I would much rather have a heart attack than a stroke. For future reference, if any of you get unilateral weakness/numbness/tingling DO NOT ignore it. There is a 3hr window in which we can give you clot busting meds that could completely resolve your symptoms. If you wait too long you are likely stuck with whatever deficit you have.

Thanks Dave... so is it with both the left arm and leg? Any other self checks we can do? I heard you can stick your tongue out and if it goes to the left (or right), it's a stroke.

My fear is not being able to recognize the signs.

I think the three easy tests they tell people to do are:

Smile - does one side droop?
Raise your arms over your head - can you get them both to the same height?
Speech - are you slurring words?

I was being tended to within 20 minutes of onset of symptoms. And I must say I feel 100% today. Neurologist just left the room, he called it a krypotogenic stroke- meaning they are unsure of the cause... from what I understood.

I did not exhibit any of these indicators.

It all depends on what vessel is affected. The best thing anybody can do to decrease your chances of having a stroke is to quit smoking.

A good start...I like grip strength comparison as opposed to lifting arms above their head.

Stick your arms straight out in front of you palms up. Close eyes and attempt to hold position. If one arm starts drifting down (pronator drift) you have a problem.

Check out Cincinnati Stroke Scale for other tests

Fuckin A. I haven't touched tobacco since 22 March of last year, and I feel great. Best decision I ever made.

I had a stroke in 2010. The docs think it was because of high blood pressure and maybe something else - they never found a definite cause. I was brushing my teeth one morning before work and the next thing I knew I was holding onto the vanity with the worst headache I've ever had and feeling very sick to my stomach. I was about 47 at the time. I don't smoke and wasn't too overweight but I drank a lot and didn't eat particularly well back then.

The left (logical) side of my brain was flooded with blood leaving the arsty-fartsy right side in charge. The right side decided to just sit back and observe, and it was quite a few hours before I worked up enough sense to call for help. The big clue was when I tried to say something to someone on the phone and Klingon came out. The right side could not associate my symptoms with a need to get help.

Luckily after a 3 day stay in the hospital I came out of it with very few symptoms.
