My daughter got my wife's 2007 Freestyle. She got it when she got her DL last January on her 16th birthday.

She is an honor roll student, volunteers at an animal clinic and the FW Zoo, and is active in two competitive sports, one of them has year round practice. She has no time for a job and she is an incredible child. My wife and I plan to buy her a new vehicle for her HS graduation.

With that kind of kid, I can't find anything wrong with that strategy. She's obviously driven.

I got mine a 90' 7-Up foxbody, bone stock. However she only drove it about 6 months before I came across a good deal on an 06' GT Premium convertible, so we swapped her into it instead. The 7-Up car is really clean and unmolested, but after she started driving more, I realized that it was still a 25 year old fox, and a rickety convertible to boot. I still drive it myself when the weather is nice, but need to get off my ass and put it up for sale.

Anyways, the 06' has been really good for her, and she's been very responsible with it too (3v 4.6 is still a pig anyways). She's taken an interestl...bought her own stereo, subs, springs, and she's been saving for exhaust now too. What's really cool is that she's done all of the work with me so far, and she's learning a bit too. She's the envy of a lot of the boys at the highschool!

Maaaaaan, that's the dream right there. I hope I'm so lucky. There's good chance of that in our future. She LOVES my Mustangs and always helps me wash them and hangs out when I work on them quite a bit. 9 has been a really fun age.

I just put my 17 year old daughter in a '12 Fusion. It's just a 4 cyl, and the "MKey" function let's me regulate her top speed, her radio volume level, and she won't be able to listen to the radio without her seat belt on. My 13 year old daughter wants a '48 Ford pickup. My son is insane about cars. I've got 5 kids, so I'm pretty much fucked.

I've had 4 cars. 2 brand new paid for by my parents, the 3rd co-signed, and 4th purchased on my own. I'll probably do the same for my kids and put them the safest available be it truck or reasonable car.

If you think about it these days, anything under ~$10K is still a relatively cheap car. The 90' isn't a bad car, but the 06' is so much safer...that was a big part of my justification....and it was priced really well too.

Here's something to make you feel even better - one of my buddies bought his 16yr old daughter one of those newer Fusions, and she only had it about 4-5 months when some dipshit crossed over the center out here on FM156 and hit her head-on. She walked away with just a few minor bumps and bruises, not even an ambulance ride. He was driving a Chrysler 300, so a pretty significant weight vehicle too. The Fusion was totaled, but she was well protected in the crash.

I want to give my son my 1966 Mustang. Mainly because it sits in the garage and rarely gets driven (3,000 miles since 2005) . It really depends if he follows in my footsteps and likes to wrench, or is one of these plump couch potatoes that are all around me.

In HS, I had a 1966 Mustang Convertible in that horrible emerglow/white color combo. Dad bought it for $5700 and I put $2500 towards it. Sold it after highschool because 12mpg wasn't going to cut it on my 50 mile commute to UNT every day.

If he loves riding in the stang and helps me work on it, it's his. Gas, repairs and insurance are on him because the car will be free.

If he doesn't seem to care, 1998 Toyota Corolla in beige then.

He turns 1 tomorrow, so by the time he is in high school the car will be 65 years old. May not be that many around anymore.

My son is almost 14 and keeps searching for lifted super dutys on craigslist. He has 10k in savings and will make quite a bit more waiting tables in the next 2 years so if anything I might have to co-sign. I think he needs more of a beater.

Im gonna make my daughter the same deal i got. My parents bought my first car and paid insurance as long as i stayed on the honor roll and played sports. They told me it wont be new or maybe not even what u want, but it will drive. I got a 76 fiat x1/9 with a totaled front end for $300.
Dad found another one at the junk yard with the rearend totaled. He took the top off and cut the car in half, dropped it in his truck and brought it home. He then traded a torch and some rebar to a buddy for the body work and paint. I loved that car. Working with my dad on it taught me so much about cars. My daughter is 14. We have decided to get a late model jeep tj that needs a little work and build it up together.

I would say don't let him spend the majority on the truck. He sounds smart. Show him a investment calculator such as. Roth IRA... Wish I could have put a little away every year when I worked part time. Instead it all sat in saving.
