Here's what I got last night and from family today. There's also a map that shows the swath of the tornado.

I'm gonna venture a guess at it being a response to this and the implication that it may have fared better had it been built with better/different lumber.

I'd like to see the planning and coordination that goes into something like that.

Everyone run once I pull the plug out of the bottom...

If the rain didn't ruin your stuff today the water from the tower will

I kind of figured that was what he was referring to, just curious how he could tell from that picture that we use cheap materials. We build to current codes, most of which include wind shear requirements to help minimize the damage and I would assume that is the reason that the damage wasn't worse than it is.

So horrible for all those people and kudos to all that have helped. This has to be the craziest stom cell I have ever seen, It has hailed on me 3 times today and just got sleet in Mansfield.

its definitely going to fuck up some shit, and with all the rain, they are just going to cause more flooding from the strom sewer. I wish i knew more about civil utilities to know how that actually works. i am sure they will direct it all to a drier part of town, but still i dont see how it wont cause more damage.

be honest, they are built to minimize cost. thinner walla, thinner floors, thinner slab. material is rediculously. we are even building commercial buildings as cheap as possibly now. sad to say but they aint what they used to be.

Cost is a concern for any business that is out to make a profit. Are some of our materials lower tier products, of course.

I am not a 20 year veteran of the business, so I can't comment on anything other than what I know.

I am not familiar with commercial construction. In residential, I am not real sure how you can get thinner walls and floors. I don't think dimensional lumber has been developed with smaller dimensions. We still build walls with 2x4's and 2x6's. Sub floors are still 3/4 tongue and groove plywood. As for slabs, I am not sure you can sufficiently compare the newet post tension slabs with the older rebar slabs. The design is completely different.

What I do know, from transitioning from the 2006 to the 2012 code, wind shear measures have drastically improved. From 1/2" j bolts poured into the slab that secure tha bottom plate at the perimeter to the slab and pour in hold down straps that secure large openings (garage doors) to the foundation, to the hurricane straps that hold roof rafters to the top plate. All in an effort to help reduce the amount of catastrophic damage that occurs during these types of events.
