Small CUV for $5000-8000

Brother in law is looking for a small CUV in this range. It's been some time since I looked at cars in this price range so what should I tell him to look for? He was thinking RAV4 or CRV

To hell with the RAV4. I have one for work and it sucks. For that price, I'd go with an 2006+ Explorer. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned.

Agreed. even the older ones are okay if you can avoid the ones with maintenance issues. I picked up an 02 4.6 4wd 3.73 limited slip cheap, that I use for work, and it has been really good.

My daily is an 01 CRV. I get 25-27mpg on avg. It's ugly, but reliable and efficient. I'd recommend one.
