Matter of choice/preference. If those guys are content and happy, then great. If they want more, they could probably get it with their own company or in management for a larger company. It's all a choice.

    no interview skills
no credit or personal finance education
a complete lack of inspiration and ambition
You can lead a horse to water...Help is there in prepping for interviews, filling out applications (for jobs and scholarships) and for just about anything. You can also find part time work at fast food, department stores, etc. Experience is experience. We recently helped out a friend's son who is 23 and lacking direction (and a place to sleep at the time). He had no idea of what a budget was or how one should work. The sad thing is, the one skill that so many youth have nowadays could help them learn so much. You can google how to do anything...

I would got that far. Choice isnt really the only thing to consider. One of them does a pretty specific kind of welding, in an air conditioned shop, packed with millions of dollars worth of equipment. I cant lie, I dont even know what it is, never got into it with him. I can say that he couldnt justifiably open his own company without some sort of investor, and paying that back would take years.

He also doesnt know the first thing about running a business, by his own admission.

I didn't go to college, and I'm not very good at saving money.

I just figured this thread was a good place to confess.

All true. Those are absolutely necessary work and life skills that the public education system does not deliver.

If a person is so unmotivated in their life that having an emergency fund is off the radar, I assume that seeking job skills online is also a no-go.

What i love is the number of people piling on millenials when the article clearly states they are performing above the average.

                Explain yourselves.

Just because students aren't required to use them or they aren't advertised with a plane flying a banner in front of the school doesn't mean they're not there. I'm married to a teacher, have tons of friends that teach or are administrators, and I have coached/coach with youth of all ages including working with high schools. The resources are there, but people choose not to use them.

Not necessarily. The problem in the case of the young man we helped was that he didn't realize he needed to change, largely in part to what I've stated above. He didn't realize how bad off he was and assumed that since he was working 25-40 hours a week, had his car paid for, etc. that he would be fine. We helped him understand those things, helped him develop a plan, helped him with a search for a better job, and gave him a timeline to use along the way. Whether or not he continues on that path now is up to him. Reality is a ruthless bitch when she slaps you in the face for the first time. For some, it happens early in life, sometimes pre-teens even. For others (many), it doesn't happen until late 20's, 30's, or later. How you react it determines who you will be...

I think people are doing that because they tend to whine about how much they make. I graduated from college in 97 with $28K in debt and got offered two jobs, one for $22K a year and another for $28K. I think the debt versus salary situation has changed all that much since then. Sure the debt is higher but I just don't see it as crippling. What has changed is the sense of entitlement that people have to the better things in life. $150 cable bills, $100 a month cell phones and sorts of other shit are now necessities to a lot of people. I couldn't pay for any of that shit on my first paycheck.

Exactly!!! When I started work after college, I continued to officiate youth sports to have money for the other things I wanted to do (hunt, fish, work on my old jeep, etc.) as well as to save more. I had a good job making a decent living with a promising future, but I couldn't afford all the 'necessities' just doing that job. There was no sense of entitlement though. If I wanted something, I found a way to make the money to pay for it.

Agreed. Right out of school I was given tons of grief because I wouldn't go out every night or buy stuff like that. Now those same people wonder why I have so much more saved than they do.

I did get offered a sort of scholarship when I was 17 though...
I was dating this rich girl. Her mom thought I was a big loser but was afraid I would marry her daughter or get her pregnant. She offered to pay for me to go to college...I still laugh about that...
