Having just finished a home theater room I can tell you that the following sub and surround perform! Granted the sub is a hair over budget but worth every penny. I demoed it against a Klipsch RWS-15 which was no comparison (not that the Klipsch was bad... it just got beat in the demo).

    Sub - http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-15hmk2.html

    Surround (reference series) - http://www.definitivetech.com/produc...ound-speakers/

One thing... the internet options are usually a lot more bang for your buck over anything you can buy locally. The companies LS1Goat mentioned are companies Id go with if buying a commercial built sub.

Its all about room size though. Definitely go ported box (my opinion) for more spl. It wont dig as low, but will have more output. Most movies use the 50-60hz area for most of their explosions. A kick drum in music is right in that area too. While its cool my house shakes at 12-20hz, most movies and music dont go that low.

Yeah I've researched that one as well (the HSU).. read a lot of good things about it for sure. Might be worth stretching the budget a bit I suppose..

Which model of surround speakers did you get? I'm going to go with stand mount this time around, no wall mounts.

Any closer to pulling the trigger on a new sub?

I am going to listing my Emotiva Ultra Sub 12s here in the next few days.

I just unpacked their replacement last night.

Yeah man, I guess I'm getting close.... I am thinking about the HSU VTF-15HMK2, just based on what I have been reading.

I'm offshore right now and I don't want my girl to have to worry about lugging a 100+ pound box into the house so I will wait til I'm about to demobilize.

But I have been asking myself, do I really need one that big, and that heavy....? So I haven't totally made up my mind. And the other thing is, I am basically doing this without hearing any of the ones that I am reading all the reviews about.

Damn I like the looks of that one ! Maybe you can demo it for me... or, maybe your old stuff is for sale? Let me know, might be an interest there...

                  you NEED a big sub...

Well, I think you need a big sub. I love the bass from movies and want to feel the explosion. Little subs in a big room make it hard to do that.

To echo what 8mpg said; With a 4,250 cubic feet room, you're going to need a big sub. I actually recommend dual subs for a more even response across different listening positions, but that won't be within the budget you specified earlier. In a big room, ported is always going to be the de facto recommendation. More output at and above the port tune with less effort(cost) vs. sealed. It takes a lot of output, displacement, and excursion to pressurize a large room.

The Dr. Hsu sub you mentioned is a strong sub for the price, but you pay shipping both ways on a 100lbs. sub. That's going to be an expensive venture if you find that it doesn't work for your listening environment.

I suggest you do a free audition with SVS or PSA. You can spend a month with it and if you don't like it, return it. You won't be out a cent. That's really the best way to go. Ed Mullen had a great idea and it works well for both parties. Otherwise, I'd still recommend the Outlaw X12 if you want to stay in the $600-$700 range. It has variable tuning options.

I'll definitely let you know. The Emotiva(s) are excellent subs. Fast and clean. One of the best musical subs I've ever heard. Solid build quality. Audiophile features like Balanced XLR inputs. However, being sealed small form factor subs they won't slam you in the chest in a large living space. They have an aggressive rumble filter that rolls off (24db/octave) hard below 30Hz. Extension is further lost with the lack of room gain. Conversely, they are obnoxiously loud and authoritative in a 13x11 bedroom.

That budget was self imposed. So, I could spend more to get a bad ass one, I suppose... definitely want one I'd be happy with... so I might just look into one of the SVS or PSA units. Or, 2 of the Outlaws..

I popped on the PSA website and was greeted by the owner via the chat window and we talked about the V1800

Create ground-breaking tremors with the V1800 Subwoofer.

Which he's got one with a slight blemish covered by the grill for $1149

Or the new 15V which ships in a week or so for $924 to my door

Experience powerful sound from the 15V Subwoofer. Your theater will become a step above the rest.

You willing to do DIY? You can have a pair of 18s in some DIY cabinets for $1000 with an Inuke amp. They are some big boxes though. My setup (60" tv btw):

Don't know if I want something that physically big, times 2. Are you talking about purchasing some already built DIY units, or buying all the goodies and doing it myself? If it's the latter, I don't know if I have time to mess with it, and furthermore, my girl might have something to say about the piling 2 huge boxes in the living room. That said, your setup looks bad ass, though is it all functional sitting like that?

Great choice. It's good you got to speak to Tom. He knows just about everything there is to know about home audio gear.

And sorry for my long winded replies above.

Its all functional... the boxes are huge and I had to build a small entertainment center to make it look ok and fit. The outer speakers are just sitting there not hooked up. I ditched the center channel and have 2 enormous mains.

DIY would be the latter. You can buy precut boxes and just glue them together and paint them. Its not that complicated or time consuming but it does take time. Lot more bass for less money.

Multiple subs is always a good idea to spread out the bass. If you can run one in all 4 room corners, even better for acoustics. You may find that no matter how great of subs you have, you lack bass in a certain frequency. My living room has the stereotypical 50-70hz suck out which leaves me with no midbass
