  • Anywhere in Fort Worth to audition home speakers / sub woofers?

I am putting together a home theater system, so far I've got the A/V Receiver, and my Left / Right towers and a center channel. All quality pieces. I am looking at subs now. Man there are some bad ass sub woofers available with DSP processing, room equalization, all kinds of cool shit.

I'm not an audiophile, but I like quality shit, and and if you don't get the sub correct things can sound ghetto pretty quick. I want to check some good shit out in person and bring my own movies / music.

Anyone ever been to a decent showroom or otherwise been able to check out some audio gear ?

For that matter if you've heard some life changing bass, share the manufacturer. There are a lot of companies out there whose main focus is speakers, so why not make the sub as well, so that the customer can just pick up everything in one stop.... then they wind up with a shitty sub. Conversely there are companies who make some bad ass shit, but they have no store front so things are bought on chance

Here are a few subs I've been reading about..........

It has always been a solid sub. No issues since 2003. I would like a pair of the new Ultras but I would like some Klipsch Rf7's first.

SVS, Power Sound Audio, Rhythmik, and Reaction Audio. Funk Audio, if money is no object. Outlaw Audio subs are rebadged HSU subs, so nothing to shy away from there as well. The Outlaw Ultra-X12 is currently on a black friday sale for around $550. It is good for around 3,000 cubic feet. Extension down to 17hz with room gain.

SVS offers a 45 day in home audition with free shipping & return. PSA and Reaction Audio offer a 30 day in home audition.

All really good subs, if not the best outside of a Commercial grade Danley DTS 10.

I have a PSA XS15se in my main listening area and dual Emotiva Ultra Sub 12s in a secondary room.

Most of the ID companies are using the new Sledge and ICE amps with adjustable PEQ, boost, and room correction. However, I let my AVR handle room correction. And then level calibrate with a meter and using REW software. The high end AVRs use Audyssey MutlEQ XT32 with Sub EQHT. Which does an excellent job at applying the right corrections filters for up to 2 subs in most rooms. For people who have really stubborn room nodes, typically will use something along the lines of SMS-1 to further calibrate their subs. Room treatment is also important, if you're looking for optimum results. Bass traps and SubDudes work wonders in a shitty room.

Power Sound Audio's Tom Vodhanel is the former V in SVS Sound. FYI

I might be upgrading my PSA XS15se to a PSA S1500 for Christmas. Maybe selling it at some point shortly after, if PSA doesn't buy it back from me like SVS offers.

The Paradigm sub's are nice and I've had mine for a few years and really like it, I just upgraded my Paradigm towers (now with built in powered subs in each tower) and a new Paradigm center channel with no regrets. Also have a Toby 12 inch powered sub we just picked up from him and for the money it's a nice piece.

700 bucks is my budget, I suppose. I mean, I am not enough of an audio freak to be swayed by everything I read on AVS forum into believing I need a 3000.00 subwoofer.... LOL, but at the same time, I do like nice stuff, and have a pretty good Onkyo receiver, a set of B&W 683s along with a B&W center channel speaker, just waiting to be hooked up when I get back from my current offshore hitch...

So, I have read all the reviews, but have heard none of them. So, for 700 and under, would you say the Outlaw Ultra-X12, an SvS, or PSA?

My listening room is 17x25x10. I like the reviews of the Outlaw Ultra pretty well.... kind of leaning towards that one.

Less than $700 eliminates anything from PSA, except maybe certain B stock legacy models.

SVS has the PB1000 for $500, but it would have considerably less output/extension than the Outlaw X12. The X12 probably is the best ID sub you can buy for less than $700. It has a better built - more inert cabinet (with additional bracing), along with their new Audera amps being much more efficient and reliable than the BASH amps on the outgoing Outlaw LFM EX. Actually, the X12 is up +1dB from 40-63Hz over the $800 SVS PB2000. And only -2dB down in the 20 - 31.5Hz range. (CEA-2010A Avg. Max Output)

Not bad at all for a sub you could buy for $549 as of yesterday, during the Outlaw Audio Cyber Monday sale.

That room size is huge. Is it open to other rooms as well?

Yeah, it really kinda connects with the open kitchen, which is huge, and the hallway to the back bedrooms, etc... by no means is it a closed room...

That is how my old house was. I thought my SVS sounded decent then but with my enclosed 14x20x10 media room it made a huge difference.

I have a SVS PB12-NSD not doing anything. Its being used as an end table right now. Its a great sub, but I built some 18s.
