Cooter/ 6.0 Diesel Guys

Looking at a 6.0 FX4 that has been "bullet-proofed" which I know can be a loose term. I have no idea on mileage or really anything specific but I'll post it up as soon as I do. Just had a buddy ask me if I was interested.

What do I need to look for?
What would I want to be replaced?

I absolutely love mine, but it has been a money pit. If someone were to get it now, they would have a very comfortable, capable, reliable vehicle, but it was a long road to get to that point. The trick is being able to know whether or not you would be on the front end or back end of all that. It depends largely on who did the work and how well the truck has been treated and maintained.

How early?

Build dates between 3-8-04 and 6-24-04. The low/reverse planetary pinions would break and walk out of the carrier. Also anything prior to 1-12-05 with a snow plow package may have a defective snap ring on the same planetary.

Well he wised up and sold it for more than he/I agreed on so moving on.

Now I found an 03 Excursion with 113k on it for a decent deal. It is box stock except for MRBP exhaust. I'm gonna guess that I should just plan to dump money into it if the motor hasn't been touched yet? It has all the service records and has pretty religious maintenance.
