  • 2001 Explorer 8.8 with discs

What is this rear end worth? It's still in the car, buddy bought the truck from a guy who said all it needed was a new ground to the fuse box. Turns out the motor is trashed. I keep telling him to pull the rear and take the $150 or whatever from the JY and get rid of it.

Is it worth pulling this rear?

Rear end is worth about $100-$150 on the high end. Junk yards are lousy with them. I have bought two for just over $100 each in the last couple of months.

I believe $200.00 is what its worth, better than a junkyard POS that who knows what it has been in or submerged in a flood.

/\That, even better if it has the calipers on it..

I show them anywhere between 150 and 425 dependent on various options, miles, etc. None of mine have calipers on them, so that's worth something, even if just core value.

Are these more/less direct swaps into classic Mustangs? I am tired of non-posi and 2.80 gears

Track width is 59 1/2" so it's a little wide for some applications. Good news is they're offset pinion so you can use two short side axles/tubes if needed. They are 31 spline, track lock 4.10 or 3.73 with disc brakes so yeah, they are very desirable.

Or you can use the disc brakes for a 9"

I sell them for $250 all day long.

If he has the time and space, pull the driveline.

$100 for a re-buildable block, $150-200 for the P heads, $100-150 for the intake and $350 for a good trans.

Then he will get about $170/ton from a scrapyard for what's left.

We're in the same situation with the wimpy, peg-leg 2.80. I picked up an exploder trac-lok, 3.73 and a spare short side axle from pick n pull for $110. You have to chop the long side and weld it up, plus weld on new spring perches. I don't have the tools or expertise, so I'm having the good folks at Dick Fitzwell's Rod Shop do that work.

Ohhhh, I had forgotten that detail. And yeah, that makes sense.

It was one of his good friends father in law, and he only paid $200 for the explorer. I'm trying to convince him to part it out.

That rear is a straight drop in to a Jeep YJ and only minor work for a TJ. I usually see them between 125 and 150 or so on the Jeep sites.
