For a 65-66 you need to shorten the long side to the same length as the short side and use another short side axle. I believe it's 3". This makes it the right width for the car and also centers the diff.

They are the right width for a 67-68 as is. The spring perches need to be cut off and new perches welded on in the right place in order to bolt up to the springs in either car. 65-66 will also need to get new U bolts and plates due to the axle tubes being so much bigger. Some people use the Explorer plates and U bolts and use foxbody shocks.

I put one in my 68 and just changed the perches. I was able to re-use my old U bolts, plates, and shocks. I have $250 in my whole swap.

Oh you probably want to grab the rear yoke that bolts to the pinion flange out of the Explorer too.

It should. The only major change I can think of is the switch from drums to discs around 98 or so.

You "can" run the stock length explorer rear in a 65/66 but you'll have to run late model wheels. The pumpkin will most likely hit the floor so it won't be able to get very low

well, except that the 01 is a solid axle, and the 03 is independent.

My original post was incorrect, I thought he told me that it was an '01, it is in fact a '99.

You have to chop the long side and weld it up, plus weld on new spring perches. I don't have the tools or expertise, so I'm having the good folks at Dick Fitzwell's Rod Shop do that work.
Would you mind terribly PMing me when you get the work done and let me know costs and how well they do the work?

I cant weld to save my life, so they could earn repeat business if its reasonable in pricing.

I'm too low already, 5 leaf reverse eye springs and have the GT350 drop on my Mustang. it is low...too low. Speed bumps scrape my Hooker headers if they are of any noticeable size.

I'll talk to Fitzwell and see what he says. Would you want to source the rear end yourself or have them get it and install? I'm sure that'll have an impact on the cost.
