Yeah, I misread and understood the girl to be the captain.
Still, the guy that was the captain screwed the pooch. The forecast was anything but favorable along their route. The hurricane was already a cat 3, with strengthening forecast.
RIP to those lost at sea.

The lady was the chief mate - on that ship she was responsible for navigating..

The AB (able bodied seaman) on our boat has worked on that boat several times and waiting for word to see if any of his buddies were on it....

Kinda sad really. Every one on our boat is talking about it. It did not have to happen at all. They should have never took off in that direction.

You're right, there is too much info out there to know better than to let that kinda thing happen.

Did you also misread the main propulsion system was lost and left them adrift?

They shouldn't have been there in the first place. If they hadn't been in the middle of a hurricane, that wouldn't have been such a huge deal.

From what has been stated, there was a plan to skirt the hurricane. My internet powers aren't good enough to assume what transpired and why.

Im sort of surprised a ship like that doesn't have any EPM's (emergency propulsion motors). Sad for the loss, I do work at the port in Jacksonville they left from.
