However building prototypes for testing is a long long long way from production. You're still going to be looking at a major redesign. Then there is testing, testing, testing.. retooling the entire plant (like Ford had to do for all F150 plants), etc., etc., etc...
I'm not saying it won't happen. It just won't happen soon. Ford went 10 years between platforms for the previous and current generations of the Mustang. They will get very penny they can out of their work before moving on to a new design...

GM was smart to focus on cutting weight. Their drivetrains are strong, but their cars have gotten so portly.
It also pays off in braking distance, fuel economy, and overall longevity as the drivetrain doesnt have to lug so much around.
Ford should be firing back with either direct injection, an aluminum body, or both.
