  • Dollar coins, not real money?

I got some dollar coins back in change over a month ago from the post office. Businesses around here haven't accepted them yet.

    quick google, these things;

Last tried to use them at a racetrac gas station on the South side of Dallas, saw an older white guy at the register (60+) and not only would he not accept them he got all pissy about it. lawl

Most cashiers seem unsure if they are real and don't want to take them. Most of them are young and SEEM to be immigrants. My racial prejudices figured surely the old white guy would take my American money. Hell, he probably even served in 'nam. The Indian man at the other register probably won't recognize James Madison or Zachary Taylor, but that older white guy probably knows a little US history. My prejudices figured wrong. He went on an angry little rant about "we're not going to take that shit" as if I had minted my own $1 coins to rip him off for a butterfinger candy bar.

I'm trying the shitty gas station with the porn and bootleg dvds next. It will be a sad day in America if the Sikhs take the money whitey refused.

The Armenian guy at my local 7-11 accepts them, and doesn't think twice about it.

Only if the masses accept that they have value, so far they have not.

I'd would have told the post office that I didn't want dollar coins as change.

I dislike carrying bills around much less loose coinage so fuck a bunch of that.

Are these the new Dollar coins that DO NOT say "In god we trust" on them? if so I would have told the Post office to shove them up there ass.

If these are old coins with the "In god we trust" on them then I would raise all kinds of hell with who ever refused them.

I hate those damn things. In Austin not too long ago I put a $20 into a parking garage bill acceptor and it spit out 16 William Henry Harrison gold coins. I was pretty pissed, both at the fact that I got gold coins as change, and that William Henry Harrison got his own coin.

If you buy stamps from the machine at the P.O., it gives you your change in those stupid things.

Businesses can refuse to accpet them, I had trouble with some $2 bills I got from Baby Dolls before.

from wikipedia: "The United States Coinage Act of 1965 states (in part):

United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes and dues. Foreign gold or silver coins are not legal tender for debts.
                        —31 U.S.C. ยง 5103

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor in the U.S. There is, however, no Federal statute that requires private businesses, persons, or organizations to accept it as payment for goods and/or services.[18]"

Worst case scenario, go out to eat, restaurants have to accept them or your meal is free. If you get a free meal, leave a nice gold tip.

James Madison does not, Franklin Pierce and Zachary Taylor do. It doesn't have a name, but I'm pretty sure it's Sacajawea and hers does.

                          I don't care either way.

I may be alone in this but I like the dollar coins. Having traveled to the UK, Europe and Australia I see the benefit of using coins for small purchases. $5 and up should be paper. Anything lower should be coin. And we should get rid of the damn penny. Costs more to make a penny than it's worth.

Retailers are free to reject any form of payment. Just take 'em to the bank and trade them in.
