2. Employers typically match up to a certain percentage, so I assume yours does too. You don't see the benefit of free money?
Just a heads up, this is not as common as it used to be. I'm well compensated, but surprised and disappointed that my current employer does not match retirement contributions.

Bingo.
While we have decent retirement in LE, if you can make it 20-25 years, it is a all or nothing type of deal for the first 5-10 years depending on your city. My first city was 2 to 1 up to 7 percent, however if you quit or become unemployed before your vested the city matches zero. All you receive is what you put in. Now I made ten years at my first city so I can leave it until I am 60 and then draw a little retirement if I decided to bail at some point and they have to match at two to one for now. Also if your are terminated at 19 years, from what I understand there is no retirement matching there either. This is why there is civil service in most cities and when officers screw up they are asked to resign vs termination sometimes. You can just lose your retirement on a something that may be sketchy or someone comes in that just doesn't like his officers. They never really explain this to anyone when you get into LE, you really have to ask a lot of questions.

well if they explained it up front, nobody would want to do the job...

Hence the "typically".
I know some companies have pulled that back. Admittedly, I haven't been active in the job market since 2004, but I've received offers in that span and in my experience most still offer matching in my field at least.

But, just like condoms and women's rights, I don't believe in them.

Does your city offer a 457 or 401k in addition to your pension?

Ours was matching up to 5%, and then stopped back in 2010 Nothing like watching free money dissipate into thin air.
It's not all bad. Just depends on which side of the equation you're on. Someone is getting that 5% match... just not you.
I'm not complaining too loudly, I'm making almost four times more than I was when they were matching that 5%, so I've more than made up the difference. I wouldn't turn 'em down if they started it back up though.

No. What may blow some of your minds is that there are still some cities that do not pay into SS. I have heard some school districts are this way also.

I think that's the norm for school districts or people paying into Teachers Retirement System
