Hotel del Coronado is a must for sight seeing. Decent lunch offering too. Also check out the Falconer working his bird.

The Hilton San Diego Bay Front is very nice for the price (<$200 per night).

I worked in San Diego for 3 and a half years and I really enjoyed it there. For relaxed beer drinking and girl watching - from the Gaslamp district take the 163 to the 805 and then go north up to the mira mesa exit (its about a 15 minute drive), turn right and then turn left on scranton and go a couple of blocks and check out this place:

Check out Point Loma too - you take Rosecrans heading toward the airport and turn right on Talbot and left on Catalina blvd to get there.

The zoo is neat and expensive (!) and is on the side of a hill so you are going up and down a lot. Balboa park where the zoo is located is pretty neat.

The beaches (Pacific beach, Ocean beach) are neat but are very crowded especially on weekends. If you like to shop the Fashion Valley mall is at the 8 and the 163.

(In California roads have a "the" in front of them - "the 8", "the 5", etc - its a local thing)

Forget Whataburger, you are stuck with In-n-out. The Habit is about as close as you can get to Whataburger out here.

Bring a windbreaker because it tends to get quite cool in the evenings in San Diego.

There is a little restaurant out on the water just south of the midway. Don't go there, the food fuckin sucks. I'd eat at long john silvers before going there again.

And yes, the Midway needs to be a stop. If you're there on a Sunday, catch a Padre's home game. They go all out for military. You'll get to see a true military town support our troops more than you've ever seen out there.

As luck would have it, the Rangers will be playing the Padres next week, so we will be going to a game to support our team! First few days I'll be staying at Torrey Pines, then the latter half of the week I'll be at the Westin in the Gas Lamp District. Thanks for all of the POI guys, I plan on hitting up most everything posted in this thread.
