I put my dog on a diet one month before her surgery. I was feeding her twice a day, dog food in the morning and green beans in the evening and she slimmed way down. We did the surgery and it was a success.

I have a 50# lab mix that did the same thing. 8 years old. our vet did an $800 procedure by wrapping some sort of heavy cording/fishing line around and through the ligament. Took about 8 weeks to heal fully but she is about 80% of what she was at 6 years old as far as getting around and even running.

Shenandoah Vet in College Station. Dr. Bostick is a great guy and VERY practical when it comes to stuff like this.

UPDATE: our dog has been doing great lately, and the brace has truly helped the recovery. We only used it for about a month and a half at first because it was wearing her hair off and we didnt want a sore. But shes walking normal now and has no problem with inclines. Im very happy i didnt spend 3 grand on a surgery that would probably still have my dog in recovery.

One of our dogs tore it's ACL. Had to have TPLO surgery to the tune of $3400. He's about 3 weeks in and seems to be progressing, but fuck what a pain in the ass.
