Is that total monthly cash outflow for the household, or just mortgage, food, utilities? That's damn good if that's total outflow.

I'm not saying it costs $4500/mo to raise kids. That is absurd. I did however read somewhere that the national average in daycare is around $18-20,000, and that's for one kid.

He clearly isn't including childcare, a roof over their head, etc. You know, the actual cost of raising a child.

My boys are 4 years apart. They were only together at daycare for one spring. My wife is a teacher, so they don't go to daycare year round. For the spring they were there together, it was like $580 per week for the two of them. We had to provide the diapers and formula too. Kids are super expensive, and while it gets a little better when they start school, you pick up other costs too. Before long, they're driving...

We would probably be fairly close-ish to that if it weren't for the $600/month in daycare for my step son, and the child support I pay my ex for my son.

Oh yeah. You've got sports and then the other organized activities like dance, cheer, gymnastics, etc for girls. Baseball is a money pit, for instance. My son left baseball and went back to soccer, which is less costly. But he's also in football, and most recently, he has started racing motocross. It costs me an average of $300 every race he participates in with entry fees, license fees, fuel, food, and damages/repairs. It can get insane. I don't know how some of these parents do it. The well to do parents, who get them a new race bike and a new practice bike every year, etc. The ones with $250,000 RV/Toy haulers, etc.

That is pretty much everything except pre tax cost of insurance. The wife has some income and she tends to pay for some frills for the kids and her but those aren't really a necessity. A pedicure isn't a life or death purchase. I tend to judge my progress by how much my net worth improves every month so I run a tight ship with low debt and low waste.
