I am sure there are some libertarian and/or property seizure Facebook groups that would love to know what the Alvarado PD is up to.

So if you have a homemade trailer all you have to is register it? Do they give a vin at that point?

I will not buy or own anything without a title.

Now days every legit trailer place that builds trailers issues a title and they have a VIN on them. I guess I should have just let the 26 ft Wells Fargo trailer go that had a home made trailer tag on it, which came back stolen after the task force checked it out later that week. Stolen about 10 years prior. I have a 6x12 that is properly tagged just fine. Yes I know many people that just have one home made tag for their 7 trailers and they all run the risk. Most all at least have their paperwork from the sale or a bill of sale. You would feel differently if you had a trailer stolen. They should not just seize it and sell it. There should be a property hearing at some point where you get a chance to show proof the trailer is yours. It is unfortunate that a lot of people don't know the laws and buy trailers with no title but most of those have been probably stolen at some point. I don't mess with to many of the smaller trailers but will impound your trailer in a minute if it is a major brand with a home made tag on it. I have impounded several box trailers like this. A couple have been returned to the proper owner and some get auctioned off after a hearing. Yes there are a lot of legit home made trailers out there, but yes there are a ton of stolen trailers out there. You can get a title for a home made trailer at the tax office just like a bonded title I believe. Unless you built it yourself, don't buy it if they don't have the title. A good deal may cost you more in the end.

according to what I was told by Denton county tax office for a trailer with a weight limit less then 7000 lbs does not require a tittle just road fees and taxes to get a plate for it. any trailer above that weight limit has to have VIN and be inspected and tittled by DOT to receive a tag. may be your friend needs to call Saul and get him to check into the theft of his trailer.

I bought a trailer from Lowes a few years ago to haul a couple of motorcycles around when I went out of town. The VIN on the trailer was a sticker that I received with the paperwork when I bought it. What a POS method for ensuring you are the owner of the trailer. Every year or so I would put clear plastic and clear tape over it to make sure it remained attached and visible. Again I'll mention what a PITA that was. I was glad to finally get rid of it namely because of having to keep track of the paperwork/VIN.

Hearing this about Alvarado PD reminds me of how Cockrell Hill PD was/is.

I normally don't argue with you, but in this case, you are wrong.

The only thing a light trailer comes with its an mso. I have one, if you want to see what it looks like. There is not a title issued by the state.

I have a lot less to lose than most, but this is some shit I'd go to war for.

Yes I was in a hurry. 4 wheelers also get a mso for farm use which you take down and get a tag for if you would like. Some people do this to get around paying the taxes. But you still have solid proof of ownership. Just trying to shed some light on the reasons . Home made tag would still be illegal for that trailer.

It wasn't stolen. The police confiscated it because at some point in this trailers life, the sticker that had the vin in it was removed, likely when it was painted. We have a bill of sale, registration reciepts, state inspection reports for the last several years. The only think the state cared about was previous registrations, and there were none, as it came from out of state. We even had an affidavit from the guy we bought it from, but the farce of a court hearing didn't even care.
