  • Insuring a teenage driver

Anyone else have a teenage driver on their policy? I use Safeco and I might be interested in looking for another insurance company. Checked on an estimate because my son will get his license next week. I have a 10 GT and 15 Sonata with full coverage and an 01 F-150 (will be his) and 09 Tundra with liability.

    Current policy: $3379.80
With my son on the policy: $7891.90

I understand the rates will go up. But $4500? Are there any companies that will allow him to drive certain vehicles? I'm pretty sure the Mustang is what is causing the increase. Safeco told me he has to be listed on all vehicles in the household. Any help is much appreciated!

You should be able to insure him onto a specific vehicle.

He should only have to be on the car he drives imho. Worst case is go to a different company to do one car for him.

From what I was told most insurance companies don't do that anymore.

I might do that. But I'd like to find a company to do everything. House included.

Try state farm. I don't have any kids, but I have my girl friend listed on only one of my vehicles.

I can't remember what the form was, but I had to sign something stating that she wouldn't drive anything but the one vehicle, and she would be fined/denied if she were pulled over or in an incident in my other car.

you can't do that anymore since its a blanket policy but you can make him a temporary driver. usually 20% of the time or whatever for the specific car he will be driving and then 5% on the other cars. that's what I did growing up.

I have my son rated on my 95 ford ranger. But he drives a 2011 GT his premium for a year is $1200 . I have been with State Farm for over 30 years and I get multi line discounts for having all cars and house with them creates a good discount also if he's a good student some insurance company offer discounts for that as we'll . Check into all the discounts they offer they can add up to your advantage. BTW my son is 19 so I don't know how that compares to a new driver . Good luck

Call the Al Boenker Agency. His commercials are corny, but their people are fantasticm. They represent several insurance companies and will do the heavy lifting for you. www.thanksal.com

This is what my parents did. I was listed on an 82 suburban eve.n though I was driving a GT. it was 13 years ago now, but I'm fairly certain it was State Farm.

That might be legal in that you wont get a ticket, but I bet a claim gets shot down with a quickness.

Just for reference, Allstate for both home and auto. 14 FJ, 12 CRV, 05 CRV and 04 Camry all with full coverage. Looked into liability only for the kids cars, but it wasn't much more to keep full cov. Daughter is 21, son is 18. ~4k/year for auto portion with 1k ded. Without kids on the policy it would be <1/2. Definitely shop around.
