  • Wtf?

So this grown ass man I work with comes into work this week all kinds of stressed and pissed off. So I ask him what’s up. He proceeds to tell me a story about how his dad scratched a winning million dollar lotto ticket. He then tells me that through this he found out his parents already had $250k in savings. So after taxes on the winnings they came home with $750k added to the savings they already had.
As to this point I didn’t see why he was upset. Then he goes off how it’s been almost a week and they haven’t given him any money! He says “I mean all I expect is like $10k, they can at least give me that!” At this point I was shocked, I thought I knew this guy pretty well and didn’t expect to hear this from him. I told him to chill out and be happy for his dad.
Fast forward to today, I hear him and a lady we work with talking in the other room. Turns out his parents invited him, and his brother and their families over for dinner. They thought that it was payday, but turns out they just wanted to share with their kids that they are buying a house (they had been renting their whole lives). His brother walked out, and his sister in law said “They can forget about us ever coming over to their new house.” The lady he was talking to here at work (a grown ass woman) then started in “Mmm child, I’m sorry, that aint right, they should give you sumin.” She then goes on, “I don’t know how some people can be so selfish.” This went on for about ten minutes, the whole time I am biting my tongue, thinking what ungrateful fucks! I would never think to get mad at my parents over this shit! $750k isn’t the fucking mega millions! That shit won’t last forever, and he’s pissed because his parents won’t just hand their adult children $20k a week after winning the lotto?
Am I off base here, or are these people fucked in the head?

And he's too stupid to do the math on the fact that eventually he'll inherit their house/assets/etc.

Instead, he's going to burn bridges with them over $10k that he won't have 6 months later, and they'll leave the money to some caregiver or something

It would never even cross my mind to expect money from my parents.
Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.

Pretty ridiculous on your co-worker's part. Hope the parents are setting aside something to settle up with the tax man at year end.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

They may owe more but i took this as taxes were already paid.

from what it sounds, before they even got the money $250k was taken out in taxes.

wait, you have parents? I thought you just deemed yourself ready to be and appeared on Earth.

As to the subject at hand, greedy people always come to light when money shows up.

The lottery doesn't know the individual circumstances of each winner. They take out 25% across the board, much like you have taxes taken out of your check but still might owe at year end. Chances are they'll owe a lot more than 25%, people get fucked all the time with a large winning b/c "but the lotto already took the taxes out!!"

I've never expected or wanted money from any of my family... probably to a fault

This. I have a 23yr old friend that claims she is a grown-ass-woman, when clearly she acts like a child.

                            Not off base at all.
Co-worker had made it abundantly clear that he is a piece of shit snake in the grass.
I'd be leary of him trying to undermine you at work.

Okay. If it makes you feel any better I probably deemed myself ready about the time my mom went into labor.
