  • Any home A/C guys on here?

Compressor just shit the bed on my house central A/C. Got some window units running, but this shit has to be fixed ASAP. Any board members or hookups on here?

How do you know it's the compressor?

My ac just stopped too, but I'm pretty sure it's just the capacitor. Should be an easy swap in the AM when the HVAC supply stores open and I can grab one.

Cause I can hear it hum before it trips the thermal switch.

Classic sign of a failed capacitor.
Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.

Shit. I am joining you guys

I was outside pulling a tree up last night and came in expecting some nice cool A/C. Big f'ing NOPE. Fan outside is humming but not turning on.

Already blew up the warranty companies phone.

$15 capacitor is definitely worth a try before a service call.

If you are not used to working with high voltage you may want to consider letting a pro do the work.

I know how to turn off the breaker next to the outside unit.

Yup. Check the capacitor. If its bulging like a swollen battery that is most likely your issue.

Mine did the same thing last night, just stopped working but would make a hum. Checked the cap and it was swollen. Went and picked up a new one this morning and its working fine now.

Caps can also go bad and not bulge, so just be aware of that.

                            Yup.

I have had 3 or 4 go out in two different homes. One of them looked absolutely normal.

I watched my friends dad die from being electrocuted when I was 7 or 8 and that is the reason for the warning.
