It used to be believed that a sneeze meant the devil was leaving your body. Also some people thought your heart stopped during a sneeze and you need a blessing to survive it.

Still others think it's a sign of illness and you may need divine intervention to survive. Which 200 years ago might not be that inaccurate, most communicable diseases would lead to death.

someone sneezed and no one said bless you. so the subject came up. is it rude NOT to bless someone?? Why would it be rude?

It's not rude not to bless someone, and I haven't had any snarts.

Im not gonna even look up this one to see what the great interweb toaster says but something I remember from middle-school. Its from the Dark Ages. When someone would sneeze that indicated sickness which was an almost guaranteed death. God Bless You was basically someone saying "Sorry you are about to die, hope you don't go to hell."

Ah-Ha! First thing on the first page!
Many of us offer a blessing when someone sneezes, and we don't even know why. Why does a sneeze get a "bless you" when a cough goes unanswered?"

"The phrase "God bless you" is attributed to Pope Gregory the Great, who uttered it in the sixth century during a bubonic plague epidemic (sneezing is an obvious symptom of one form of the plague)."
