You bought a boat? It's fun until September oct then it sits. Looks nice though congrats! See you at the lake. Btw they wouldn't deal on mine either in 2008 paid it off in 18 months though.

I get the GM employee discount on GM shit. So I buy a lot of GM shit. Most of the time the discount puts it at $6-10,000 off of sticker price. So it isn't the best deal but it is relatively close and it comes with no hassle.

I always tell them that I can write a check for it today and that puts a sparkle in their eyes. Then I ask their finance clown what kind of money he can get me. Last guy said 4% and I burst out laughing. My credit score is ironclad and my balance sheet is like a medieval fortress. I always use the interest rate as a worthless bargaining chip. They'll come in with 2% or some bullshit like that and I'll tell them that sounds fine as long as they will give me X,Y and/or Z for free. They do it every time. Then I break the news that I am putting 50% down. Then I pay whatever the note is off within the first year and pay very little interest any way.

Gets a little weird with the bank, imo. I did go ahead and get financing from my bank first, Colonial Savings. Pretty good people, as banks go at least. Said my credit score was a 749. My interest rate was going to be 4.75%. Problem was, they wanted to do a 6 year note, and that put the payment around... can't remember...$460 a month? Didn't like the sound of that. Didn't want a big payment, just in case I had something come up that wiped me out. I really wasn't looking for a new boat, but that was the only way I'd get a 12 year note where the payment was close to what I wanted to see. Bank said I could only buy 2005 model and up, or else my interest went up to 6.75, and with that they wanted it paid off in 5 years. I don't like that! I want more flexibility!

The boat I actually was going for at first, was a 2003 model but it was clean and had everything. Couldn't do it without paying a lot more per month than I wanted to. So its not all cut and dry, you have to weigh a few things even with good credit. Kind of irritating, actually. They're so piss scared to lose a penny they won't even let you buy an older boat. They can see from my credit that I pay for shit, why am I going to stop now?

Zero debt here, but it took a ton of discipline and planning (and driving 15 yr old vehicles) not low monthly payments.

As already stated, you started the conversation with the payment, they saw a fool.
Very few people do what you do. Very few. At the risk of somehow sounding like a barg: Other than the boat and the house I'm debt free. The boat I'll pay off in 4 or 5 years, less than half of the loan time of 12 years. I have 3 vehicles all paid off, and I'm not buying any new ones. Don't need 'em. 4 credit cards, all with zero balance. Use them to make my credit rating high and get their benefits. I wouldn't have bought this if it were like you were describing, and was some kind of a stretch for me to make the payment. If I couldn't wipe my ass with the payment each month, then I don't want it. Its not like $244 is some astronomical amount of money, and I'm an avid fisherman. I will be fishing in the wintertime. Provided weather allows for it of course.

LOL! Reason behind this statement? Or is it just because its not something you'd recommend, when it comes to maintaining sound finances?

This. I'll try, but I kinda loathe it. I'm more of a "Well do you want it, or not?" type of guy.

12 year note, 90hp engine. 4 stroke yahmaha. Boat has 10 year warranty, and they'll haul it back to the factory for me, and back, for free if it breaks. He said they're constantly going up there and back, so its just something they do for their customers since they're already going. Since it would be free, I'll have no problems. If it would cost me $800, I'd have problems.

lol naw, its a new boat but its a 2014 model. I guess it just didn't sell because of the shape all the lakes were in?? Its a little strange, and I don't claim to know why this is, or all the particulars. But the same boat, but 2015 model, is $10k more. Its $32k, mine was $22k. I have no idea why. Doesn't make very much sense to me. He showed me those first before I even knew about the 2014. Mine even had a few upgrades on it that the 2015 didn't have.

Yeah no, very little room for negotiations. Again trade-ins if you have it and then they will work with you on accessories and the installation of those accessories. (fish finders, lights...etc...etc.) Be sure to talk directly to the riggers though when dealing with those things, those guys have great ideas in my experience.
What boats have you bought over the years, and where? This will be my first one, and I got it from Carey and Sons in Granbury. Not real far from where I live. Drove over there to look at a craigslist boat they had, which they'd sold. I began to think they might keep that one there just to get people in the door. Probably just a conspiracy theory.

I'm curious now. What have you bought? The raptor in your avatar makes me think you bought a boat that was $40k+

Some of these pontoons these days are getting really high. The luxury ones ran up around $70k. But they were 28-36 foot boats. Mine is only 22'.

                    My math isn't mathing.

                    $244/month for 12 years (144 months) is $35,000
$22,000 financed at 4.5% interest for 12 years is $28,500
$24,000 financed at 4.5% interest for 12 years is $31,000
$22,000 financed at 6.5% interest for 12 years is $32,000
$24,000 financed at 6.5% interest for 12 years is $35,000
$22,000 financed at 8% interest for 12 years is $35,000

Word of advice, go as big as you can go when it comes to motors.

Also expect to pay another couple grand in accessories...etc...etc. It is best to buy those with cash with the purchase of the boat due to the tax break. I can't remember the details.

The year before last (2013ish) it was almost impossible to find decent used pontoons. A lot of people buy them since they are decent all around boats. Without a tritoon ski'ing is more or less out - but tubing, fishing, cruising hanging on beaches - the toons are good.

Which shop did you buy it from? I know Plano Marine does a lot of extras for their customers as well from a customer service point of view.

                          Which lake ya gonna frequent?

Who buys a boat during summertime? If you had bought it during winter in a snowstorm you would have gotten a killer deal. Was shopping for jetskis and got ooffered one for 35% off last years model.
