    Lmao. Zero!

Also, I've never approached the dealer experience without my budget/financing/math worked out way ahead of time. All they are there for is to fill out a bill of sale.

      A few things I noted...

Negotiate until they basically tell you to leave.

Trade-ins are nice because you can fight hard on those and pay less taxes on the actual purchase of the next vehicle.

Offer 0 to 50% of list price for any options you want. i.e. remote start typically is around 1000 dollars at the dealer. Offer 200 bucks for it or make it be thrown in for free...etc...etc. (Running boards, tow packages/options or any other option applies here)

I use dealership service. I know. But I also use that as leverage when negotiating at the same dealership.

Also, keep a number in mind for the NEW vehicle and a separate number you want for your trade-in. Negotiate those numbers separately and I prefer to do each 1 at a time.

Also, keep in mind how many years of payments you want to make. Don't let them sweet talk you from 4 years to 7 years to meet your budget number.

      Be prepared to walk.

Be prepared to get a call back.

Be prepared to be there all day.

The #1 rule I always remember....Have no mercy on your budget and remember they only have to worry about your deal for a day or two. You have to live with it for the life of the car/loan - do not buckle.

The #2 rule is to remember that you're still getting screwed. Maybe the dealership is not making out like a bandit on that specific deal, but the manufacturer is though.

I'm not a dick, I'm calm and polite. However, once I get them in the ballpark on numbers I do start throwing in the options and other crap...like a prick. I leave tired and generally not feeling like I "won" but I know damned well I got it as good as I could get it. Especially when I hear what others paid for a similar/same vehicle.

You will be told to leave when they've had enough and can do no more as well. I've left a few times and one time I got a callback though.

It's all a big game that you lose a lot of money on. You cannot win all you can do is get the best deal in town that you can get.

Okay, that's a totally different game.

Yeah no, very little room for negotiations. Again trade-ins if you have it and then they will work with you on accessories and the installation of those accessories. (fish finders, lights...etc...etc.) Be sure to talk directly to the riggers though when dealing with those things, those guys have great ideas in my experience.

That's why I never actually decided to believe it. Just something I've heard said. But even a 100% markup in price from what they paid, wouldn't result in a 100% profit. Of course you know they have all their fees and bills and commission to pay. All manner of costs. Anyone know what the real percentage is? As a general rule, or ballpark. Of course it would vary.

Never heard that. I said I wanted $200 per month, they said "Naw, we can't do that. Sorry." So then I said something like "Well I'd really like to at least see it down around the $220-$230 area. Beyond that and we're out of my budget". The reply was just head shaking, and more "Naw, sorry."

I would have liked that approach better than "Well either buy it... or don't. Its whatever". Didn't help that the one that I went to see from a craigslist ad, had sold. And the ad was still up.

You're one of those folks that equates the cost of something to the amount you pay a month? No WONDER!

I'll never understand this line of thinking. Your monthly payment is the result of your financing math, not the first number you input.

You took the conversation straight to the monthly payment, and wonder why you couldn't get a deal? They saw you coming. That's why.

No, I'm going to pay this thing off in half the time the loan is for, probably less. Just how I roll, I can't stand debt hanging over my head. Only debt I can't do that with is my house, cause its just too much. Not going to live here forever anyway. So since I'll be paying it off early, maybe it doesn't even matter, but that's really not the question here. My question was "do they really even 'deal' anymore". To me, that line of thinking that you're talking about, is coming from someone who is already in, or is about to be in, massive debt.

Well, no not straight there. If it sounds that way I should have been more clear. That was actually the next day.

Even then. You shouldn't ever negotiate a payment, because at that point they have won and will fuck you. Period. You negotiate the purchase price and accessories. Secure financing before you go. Negotiate the price. Give the dealer opportunity to match or beat your separately secured financing.

This is the type of shit I'm talking about when I say that people think they can negotiate, and they can't.

I buy things I can afford today, and that means total cost, not what I can afford every two paychecks. I'm not looking for debt like those who are using your line of thought.

Zero debt here, but it took a ton of discipline and planning (and driving 15 yr old vehicles) not low monthly payments.

As already stated, you started the conversation with the payment, they saw a fool.

I bought my f150 the night of New Year's Eve. I got what I feel was a good deal after driving about 9 different trucks.

Of course they deal... on my last truck, we sat down and they asked what I wanted my payment to be. And we went from there.

I know I suck at negotiating. That is why I hate buying cars.

At least I can admit it.
