I have a couple of friends that live there and love it but they also loved Lubbock while at Tech. There is a fantastic brewery though, http://www.lacumbrebrewing.com/

It is the only place I have lived where it was perfectly normal to have the street lights come during the middle of the day. The dirt blows in and you can't see across the street. Had 2 cars sand blasted while sitting in the parking lot at work. There is a reason the surrounding towns are named Brownfield, Levelland and Plainview.

Except that Amarillo is a big flat shithole and Albuquerque has nice scenery and a lot more outdoor activities. I've spent some time in both, and I don't see how you could even compare the two.

My $0.02 is to go ahead and take the job, and form your own opinion. If you don't like it after a year or two, come home with a little longer resume, and a higher asking salary. This was my plan when I moved to San Diego back in 2009, and though I moved away from the crazy high COL, to a more livable high COL, I'm still here in CA.

              Oh yeah, and fuck California.

Those guys over there aren't homeless, they are just saving for retirement!

I've only been to Albuquerque on 1-2 day trips for, but I liked the areas I saw. I like the desert though, so if you don't like the desert, you probably won't like it there.

The elevation is decent, and they do get snow in winters (google says avg of 11 inches a year). And as has been mentioned, you are close to mountains / wilderness, if you enjoy that.

As for housing, these days, aside from metropolitan areas, most housing is pretty similar. I cannot imagine the median cost of living there being any more than DFW.. Maybe even less.

                  Here, some very quick googling:
Abq - The median household income is $47,399.
DFW - The median household income is $58,190.
The median home value in Albuquerque is $166,200.
The median home value in Dallas-Fort Worth Metro is $162,200.
I40 runs through it, which gets you to some good places both east and west, and I25, for north and south. Both positives, IMO. As I recall (it's been a few years since I have been there) the freeways and areas I visited all seemed pretty nice / well kept.

If you like longboarding / skateboarding, I have heard it referred to as the Land of a Thousand Ditches: http://bulldogskates.websitetoolbox....6291?&trail=15

The only thing negative I have ever really heard is regarding the cops.. I think I linked a Rolling Stone article about the Abq PD on here within the last year..
