Any of you DFWM guys ever been to Jamaica?

I'm going in August (10~17th), but was looking to get some forum advice on sight seeing locals or places to visit out there.

I went in 2000, stayed at Hedonism III shortly after it opened. Great place to go if you're single or a swinger. I am/was neither, so there were parts of it we didn't experience, but it was still okay staying on the "prude" side of the resort. After midnight, things got crazy no matter where you were on the resort. Lots of hot tub orgies.

Weed was everywhere. We bought from our bus driver that picked us up at the hotel to take us to the resort. We bought more from a guy selling t-shirts by the pool inside of the resort. It's illegal there, but as long as you aren't acting stupid, you'd be fine. I mean, if you're into that kind of thing. It looked and smelled amazing, but I've had much stronger stuff here in Texas.

My biggest regret is that we didn't do more stuff outside of the resort. We spent one day at the local market, which was kinda lame, to be honest.

The beach where we were sucked. The water was beautiful, and it wasn't crowded, but the beach itself was small and rocky.

I plan to go back to Jamaica soon, and the whole trip will be planned around outdoor adventures. Dunn's River Falls is supposed to be awesome, but you can also take ATV excursions into the jungle, zip lines, horseback riding, snorkeling, etc. I would also like to check out some of the restaurants outside of the resort, and maybe even a club or two, just for the experience.

So, my advice is don't get too caught up on the resort amenities. Find a place that's safe and clean and in good proximity to cool outdoor activities. Get out and experience the land. From what I've heard, you can usually put together activities on your own that are cheaper and more private than the packages the hotels will put together for you, but I'm not speaking from first-hand experience on that.

Oh, and it's going to be hot and muggy as fuck.

We stayed at The Beaches Resort. Unfortunately, I was tired and the family was having too much fun staying on the resort, so that's about it.

I got deported from Jamaica once. The river falls weren't that cool, and Ochoa Rios is a shithole.

Good friends of mine are going to Negril later this month. They lived there for 12 years before moving back to the states. I'll ask them for any recommendations.

Most of the people that tell me they love Jamaica, love to be at the big resorts. It doesn't seem like the kind of place to get off the grid.

Long story short (I.E. not Craig'd Out) The Travel Tour driver and I hit it off talking about cars. He invited me to go watch a Jamaica Cup soccer game and I went with him his buddy and his buddies wife. I went and got shit-face drunk, cursing at the opposing team and the refs in a sea of 400-500 pot-smoking, rum-swilling Jamaicans. They treated me like a good friend and I had a fantastic time.

This one is Sharma and I (my travel guide). He's cool as hell and we're friends on facebook & still talk a couple times a month. It was arguably the coolest damn thing I've ever done on a vacation.

Ever watch the AWE channel? It's pretty cool. I have seen a couple of shows on there lately where one of those fine broads is in Jamaica going to all these cool places and doing cool stuff and eating cool food. There seems to be plenty of cool shit to do, way more than you could ever fit into a week's vacation.

Just like Mexico, there are a shit ton of really poor people living in shacks and boxes and shit. You don't necessarily want to get lost in one of those neighborhoods, but there is all kinds of nature shit to check out and different getaways, bars, restaurants, etc outside of the resort areas. That's what I wish I had done when I was there and what I will do when I go back.

Save those pics, because that story is so rad it's almost hard to believe. You'll want to tell your grandkids about that one.

Been to montego bay on a cruise. The island is beautiful and the people are awesome, but certain areas are shitholes. The schools look like prisons. The water isn't as nice as cayman or cozumel.

One thing though, if you get a ride into the mountains, you had better make a deal with God first. The drivers are absolutely insane.
