What to do with a box of cat5 cable

I have a storage unit piled up with Black Box Cat5e. I should probably throw some of it on craigslist.

How is the fire inspector going to know what is and isn't unused cable in the ceiling, besides just seeing a crap ton of cable?

Beats me. I just know that companies have popped up to remove it all in the past few years.

The answer is maybe $5-$10, you can get 500FT brand new for $30-$40.

Also, if its not CAT5E, its worth even less.

They know because for the last 20 years people have just be running network cable on top of drop ceiling and not in rails which is what they bitch about more so than just deleting cables. I believe it has to be inside conduit or on top of a ceiling suspension setup now because of power-over-ethenet using 20-50w.

All of the old unused cables above a drop ceiling must be removed before the city will give you a certificate of occupancy. The old cables are considered a fire hazard. You got 25-30 years worth of cables in most commercial properties.

I run commercial cable all over Dallas every day and there are plenty of buildings I've been into that used the existing network cable in the building, both in the walls and ceilings. Most of the times we're running new cable it's because we're adding onto an existing system and they're upgrading to shielded Cat6 for video capabilities.

The only reason the cables would have to be removed is if they are in a return air ceiling and are not Plenum cable. All pvc cable is hazardous when in a fire.
