  • debit card fraud...

what a pain. someone made fraudulent charges in Houston @ several Krogers and in Ohio at 4 seasons on my debit card overnight. The lady on the phone says " we can get you a new card in 5-7 days, is that convenient" I had to laugh....

    god bless.

I've had this happen twice in the last two years. Both times everything was bought in south dallas, and a few online stores. For some reason the bank refused to tell me who it was after they nabbed the guy that did it the 2nd time.

so do you get your cash back that was spent? Ive been under the impression that debt cards are iffy as to weather you get your cash back. For this reason I only use c/c for purchases.

oh yes. ive had it happen like twice I think. always got back 100%. Bof A emailed me this morning asking me to look at my account, and sure enough there it was.

        god bless.

They gave back everything I disputed without question.

I had someone charge $700 on mine somewhere in mexico a few months back. I went to my bank and they handed me a temporary debit card to use until my new ones came in.

I keep two Chase accounts for this specific reason. If they get one I can move money into the other and still have a working debit card. I've had several debit cards compromised but they've never gotten into one of the accounts.

Good to know, first time I have had this happen was last month. Apparently someone wanted to go to a football game in Australia on me, called the c/c company and they fixed it easy as that.

you can go pick up a temp card at a BofA branch.

Most of the time your bank will catch it before you do. My last one showed up as an $11 charge at some dude ranch on Wyoming, then I got an e-mail from Chase with a number to call. There were three different hotels in the UK and I believe one in NYC trying to charge my account for $1200 or so. The only thing that ever showed up was the $11 and it was credited back within a few days.

For this very reason, don't carry your debit card. Ever. Lock up in the safe and leave it there. I haven't carried one in probably ten years. Debit cards provide direct access to your checking account, it's a bitch to get your money back and you get no rewards or incentives for using it.

Get two rewards credit cards. One to carry for every day use and one to use only for secure online bill pay/auto pay stuff. This way if your every day card is compromised you don't have to go through and reset all of your online stuff. Pay each one off at the end of the month. If one gets compromised, it has no direct affect on your checking account, you aren't responsible for the charges and the credit card company gets to go after the offender if they choose.

It took me over a month to get a replacement card from chase because they forgot to send it the second time...but they kept telling me it was almost there. Some of the banks are able to print cards on site...but i never got one because it was always coming the "next day".

Had my debit card info compromised 2x. Both times the bank gave me the money back.

First time it was a small charge that hit (they do that to test that the card is good) they then tried to hit it with a big charge for some overseas hotel/travel the bank denied it.

2nd time it was some bill pay site that charged me $700, bank caught it but still let the charge go through for some reason? The ended up refunding me a few weeks later.

Since the 2nd time I don't use my debit card online anymore. Got a few CCs and I try and only use the debit at the ATM. I will let the CC company sort any odd charges before they send me a bill. (Hopefully)
