I've been looking around the Dallas/FortWorth area for homes ( as far out as Quinlan ), and when i look on the south side of Dallas I see really large nice homes in DeSoto and Duncanville and the prices are lower compared to other parts of Dallas.

Is there any particular reason as to why? I just moved back here after being gone since 2009, and I hear things like fracking in Denton which makes me wonder what are other major issues around Dallas that I might not know about.

I have enough deposit for $200k home and $20k in updates, however I would go as high as $300k if its something that really makes sense. Unfortunately from what I've seen is those numbers don't get anywhere near what they used to. I would prefer some land ( 2-3 acres ) and 2500+ sq ft, which I don't think is unreasonable, but I seem to be having trouble finding the locations that offer what I want in the area. Most homes built on land that i've seen are shit.

I grew up in Desoto. It's Hooded out. If you can stay on the north west side you're alright. The closer to Lancaster you get, the shitter it gets.

market is crazy right now for buyers. Friends brother has a budget the same as yours and he has been looking for the same area since january trying to find something he likes. He found one and submitted an offer last week for 20k over but realtor said sellers want to wait till after open house this weekend.

You should wait a little longer. Interest rates are coming up and are going to put a bit of a lid on this market mania we are in right now.

I saw you talking about that on Facebook but I don't know what to read about to understand it

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

do you have kids or plan on it? Id stay away from Duncanville, Desoto, Oak Cliff, Cockrel Hill, etc... Look further south towards Midlothian or Waxahachie. I have a friend that likes the Ferris and Wilmer area. Where will you be working?

Unless you want them to be street smart instead of book smart.

The market is insane right now, we are looking for a new house and might just build. We will probably be listing our house soon, but I doubt it will last a week and if we build it won't be ready until the end of the year. It sucks to buy right now, most houses aren't making it past a few days and have tons of offers.

This. Red Oak is not to bad just depending on how long you plan on living here. My buddy just bought a house on 36 acres in Bristol for 200k even I think. Tecumseh Park and Pecan Hill all have a little property and acreage.
                      Whos your Daddy?

Grand prairie is hood too. Any part of Arlington that goes to Bowie HS, is shitty. You can look up the ISD ratios to get an idea of the area. Midlothian is nice, really great deals out there.

It really helps to know the area you plan to work in though

Same boat here. Can't find shizzle for under 300k that's worth a shit. Hope it doesn't keep climbing like I think it will and in 4 years 500k will be like 300k now with my luck.

I gave up on exactly what you're looking for months ago. Not going to happen. I decided to build in a typical neighborhood with all options I want.

Looking out west for a couple hundred acres for weekend activities.

The Bryson area is pretty fun. Two pretty large cities within 30 minutes.
