  • Living downtown in a large city (NYC ect)

I just watched this documentary on Amazon called "[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J54AQG0/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0"]The Vanishing City[/ame]". It's about building / property owners turning their rental units into "large" mansions or building high-rises and how it's forcing the poor people out of the city.

The commercial side of the documentary I get. I'm not a fan of how eminent domain can be used in come situations. What I don't get is the private side.

I struggle to grasp why the renters think they should have so much power over property they don't own. In my mind the owners should be able to do what they want as far as pricing and renewing/not renewing leases. That's the benefit of actually owning the property, isn't it? If they want to build a 4 story mansion why is that a problem? I feel for the displaced renters, but they can't expect the people that own the property to plan their lives around their tenants.

I have lived in the burbs my whole life. I know NYC is a very different world from mine, I just don't get this mentality. Anybody ever lived in a downtown area of a large city that can enlighten me?

Rent controlled places to live. Property owners are cheap if they really wanted someone out they could buy them out.

This is exactly whats happening here in Austin. All the blacks, mexicans and the poor people are up in arms because they can't afford to live in downtown or in the vicinity and feel like they are being pushed out for the higher income individuals.

I live just north of Austin and the prices are sort of reasonable but you can tell the prices are starting to trickle up to my area and rent is getting high and home prices are starting to really get up there. Still no where near a price for a home near downtown or rent prices.

There are some areas where ownership of a home is a foreign concept.

Either take control of your own life or be subject to having your life controlled by others.

When we lived in SF, I heard several stories of landlords offering $100k, $150k, whatever to tenants to move out - the tenants rarely took the offer. Our landlord told us he hated to see a good tenant leave, but got to raise the rent by nearly $2k a month so I'm sure he doesn't miss us that much, lmao.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Yeah ive seen a lot of whining too. I understand it sucks but take charge of your life and own property or play by someone elses rules. There are still plenty of cheap places to live in the austin area.

Now the property tax surges do suck for home owners. They are going to climb until a paid off house is the same as the original mortgage just from taxes.

It disgusts me that its turned into a race thing. Especially with that dumbass lawyer and his stickers.

Why should the price of rent be affected any differently than the price to buy a house? By that, I mean if someone can raise the price on a house some obscene amount (NTX has seen a lot of home values go up over $100K in the last 3-4 years), why can't rent? Both should be priced according to what the market will support. I don't really feel bad for anyone displaced. You should know what you might get into when you choose to live somewhere.

It is all about entitlement. People there truly feel that they should be able to live in a half million dollar apartment and only pay $800 a month. Just because they don't have a job, nor do they want to get one, the city of New York should provide for their needs.
