    Cool, thought it was you.

How long have you been driving?

It also depends a lot on what type of hauling the O/O does. I used to see a number of them out at the Port of LA driving old ass, busted up cab-overs. Those were preferred down there because the yard could be quite tight. They weren't much more than yard goats, but those guys could buy a used truck for $15 - $20k, work 9-5, and could get by on $2k a week gross. Most of it will depend on equipment costs and mileage you are traveling.
No. He's confusing gross revenues with gross pay, and gross margin with net pay. You've taken all your revenues in, and gotten to the part where all your expenses and overhead are covered. You're still not at net pay, you're at gross.

Most owner operators are not savvy businessmen, and could not tell you the difference between revenue and "pay". I am willing to bet by "gross pay" he means gross revenue.

That's what I'm saying. It's still a shitty margin, any way you slice it.

Do they have taxes withheld or just settle up at year end?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Most are 1099 and settle at the end of the year.

                        This..

Many also have to pay the tags / taxes on their trucks at the end of the year. We used to have a lot of customers asking for extensions in December / January, and any time they needed a rebuild or a full set of tires. lol.

Most of my career in the industry (7 of 10 years) was on the wholesale side (Dealer Inventory Finance) though. I left the risk desk in 2001.

Gross revenue. +6% was a bad trading day for bullet, however.
