A few weeks ago, I went to the Tax office during my lunch break ( 40 miles round trip) to renew my tags on a truck that basically sits 9 months out of the year. This was the second attempt, due to the State's computers being offline or some garbage.
I get to the office.. I am third in line for 2 windows. One window is clearly not going to happen anytime soon from the way the conversation sounds. The Little old lady at the front of the line goes up and is renewing her tags, I just stand there with the only other guy in line and just wait.
I notice just how frail the old lady is, I start thinking she is going to need some help I bet. Sure enough, she finishes at the window, turns around looks at both me and the other guy briefly. As I am about to ask her, she asks me If I can help her walk out of the office. I say "absolutely", and she takes my arm as I assist her through the doors. She makes the comment " I do not want you to lose your place in line". I tell her "Its not big deal... I was at the back of the line anyway" Which was true at that point.
I walk her through both doors (Tax office and Court office share a building) and asked her do you need help to your car while watching a few people walk by. She says yes. I help her to her car, assist in unlocking and opening the door and assist in helping her in, and then close the door for her. She said thanks and I was a Gentleman and that stuff, but I was more terrified of closing the door too hard or not shutting it hard enough to have to do it again on her.
With my good deed done, I go back into the office... 4th in a new line, with each and every single one having seen, what I was doing, including the lady at the window. Oh well, I just waited for my turn in the new line.
Yes, I was kinda ticked off, but I knew I made the right choice. I would do it again. It cost me maybe another 20 -30 minutes. I knew My Mom and Dad were both proud and smiling. That to me was worth it. I figure this...IF I live to be her age, I hope someone helps me out.
