mechanic would be fun to do! Bring in some pistons and rods and explain how the gasoline is forced in and mixes with air(science) and cause an explosion(science) that moves the motor around. Then go into that is why motor oil and coolant is important because it protects your car motor from getting too hot during these mini explosions, and have some pictures of blown up and cracked blocks.

        boom

You've got it easy on this one. At least you aren't tryin to explain insurance sales.

what about a see-through model? Kinda small but it might work fine being 5-6 year olds.

This is a 1/4 Visible V-8 Engine Plastic Assembly Kit from Revell-Monogram. This is a skill level 3 model, recommended for ages 12 and up.

Tell them they are already in a competition for a high paying job when they become an adult against other kids who don't even live in this country yet.

So to pay attention in school and find a skilled trade so they can earn and good living and keep some of the money in the US, not to all get sent back home overseas.

Got any toys of the vehicles you repair? Could maybe do a demo of how hydraulics works (use a small syringe and large syringe linked by a tube) on the back hoe?

Whip out your tools and let them feel them. Maybe take something simple and clean with some easily removed nuts and bolts and screws and have a volunteer kid take something apart. Show them how math is used like for measuring or identifying tool sizes.
