A man was killed and a woman suffered life-threatening injuries when a drag race led to a Friday evening wreck, Amarillo police said.
About 7 p.m., the driver of a silver Chevrolet Tahoe was driving east, racing what police think was a yellow Ford Mustang on Southeast 34th Avenue near South Grand Street, Sgt. Warren Gross said.
The Mustang cut the Tahoe off and caused the SUV to roll over, Gross said.
The Mustang then drove away from the scene.
The driver of the Tahoe, a 24-year-old man, was killed in the wreck. A passenger, a 29-year-old woman, was transported to a local hospital with what police described as life-threatening injuries.
Police responding to the wreck found a child safety seat inside the SUV, but no child was involved in the wreck, Gross said. The discovery at first led to a search of the scene for the child.
Police had not identified the driver of the Mustang, who could face multiple criminal charges.
