My '05 is still holding up fine with no real issues. Had to get the parking brake fixed per a TSB, but that's it. Normal maintenance items thus far. I've been bad and haven't replaced the spark plugs yet (99,000 miles on the car).
I had the sagging leather, too, on the door panels. Just pulled them down, removed the felt crap that didn't hold, and the rubber cemented them back in place.
Originally posted by Trip McNeely View PostI hated my 06. It was a piece of junk. It leaked water around the windshield and i would have an inch of water on my floorboard everytime it rained, and water all over the PCM. I'm really surprised it didnt have any lights on the dash go on from that. Transmission was horrible too, it would stutter occasionally on downshifts. It was slower than my Mach 1. (03) Wasn't impressed with it, glad I got rid of it, wouldn't buy again."Self-government won't work without self-discipline." - Paul Harvey

No major issues on my 06, granted not my daily any more. Was my daily for about 2 years when I got it new around April of 06. No issues of water getting in car. I did hear about that issue, maybe it was early model of 06?? I just fixed the sagging leather piece on the door with some 3m spray glue. Other than that, I still love the car.

I have yet to tune a 4.6 3V but on the trucks with the 5.4 I have learned some tricks along the way that i was skeptical about but since employing them I have yet to break one. Allows me to charge $500 to swap them instead of teh $1100 the dealer wants or the $800 most other shops charge.
First get it to temp and then seafoam into the intake until it dies. Start up again 15 minutes later and do the smoke show. Wait for it to cool down and then turn just a quarter turn and spray them down with carb cleaner and let it soak for at least 30 minutes. Then you do something that sounds nuts. Use an impact gun (on a lower setting) and the plugs will break lose without issue.

Thanks guys - just to close the loop, I did end up picking it up from the guy last weekend. He let me take it home for a day, so that I could put it up on the lift and get a good look at it. He had already told me that it had a minor accident history too, and Autocheck confirmed that as well....from what I can see, it has had the front bumper cover replaced, and some work on the front edge of the left fender. It's also had the decklid resprayed (poorly) as well. The damned thing is black, so everything shows. Mechanically it seems to be in really good shape though....the only issues I found - it has some noisy strut mounts and the outer tie-rods do indeed have a little slack in them.
Nevertheless, I think it all worked out about right...he willingly came down on the price even more to compensate for it needing those few things. Since it's her first car I don't want something super nice anyway...just mechanically sound and more reliable. I drove it a bit the last couple days, and you guys were right...it is night and day over the foxbody when it comes to being a driver and creature comforts. Aside from the even shittier seats and piggish acceleration, it's a lot like the 13' that I had (which I liked quite a bit).
I'm just happy to have been able to find a convertible GT that generation for under $10K that hasn't been totally beat to shit. I'll update with some pics later.Last edited by Rreemo; 04-28-2015, 09:29 AM.70' Chevelle RagTop

I'm specifically hoping Jeremy sees this and comments, but anybody with experience would be appreciated.

I know that I've heard some shit about the chain tensioners in them, and from my experience with the early 4.6's, they are pretty hard on the oil...if you don't keep it changed, run low speed/idle a lot, or run Pennzoil, you're sure to build enough sludge to clog up the pickup tube.
Not sure if that is still a problem in the newer ones too, but it was really common in my dealership days all through the 90's....especially with Crown Vic service vehicles, and Town Car's that were being used in the shuttle/airport businesses - the ones that idle for extended periods.70' Chevelle RagTop

Blake, a well-cared for GT is actually a pretty good used car. The reliability issues I've heard of have been from people that abuse them, or amateur hot rodders doing dumb stuff to them. I said earlier to find the newest car you can, because enhancements continued throughout the model run.
Also, glad to see this thread come back up. I saw this car with stock 20" wheels from a 2015 GT and thought it looked great.
