Why NOR instead of just a NOT gate?

I was going to use a NAND. Put a voltage on both inputs, but run one of them through the sensor. When the sensor is tripped and turns off its gate input, the NAND will turn on. In the link, they refer to it as a NOT.

That is what I would have tried. That or a NAND circuit.

I do NOT know. :-) The NAND was the first thing that came to mind since I have worked with them more.
