  • What would DFWM do?

What would you do, and how would you feel, if you found out one of your coworkers was being paid a higher wage per hour than you are?

You are in a lower management position, with responsibilities out the wazoo, and have over 4 years experience in your respective field.

Your coworker is a part-time pee-on with zero responsibilities, and zero experience in your respective field, and you are constantly having to assist, train, and/or correct this person because they don't know shit from shinola.

    Except they can Spanish.

How would you react to this situation?

Every time you have to answer a question for him or help him with HIS job, pull out a receipt book and give him a quick hand written bill for your time. Next he asks you a question tell him he needs to pay his tab first. You shouldn't work for free. He might get the point.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

You just answered your own question. They are likely getting a higher pay grade simply for being bilingual. And you should never discuss pay with your coworkers. Your reaction is the reason why it has always been an office taboo.

Were you happy with what you were making before you found out?

If I believed in your management team I'd just keep going about my daily business.

It sucks that you have this knowledge now, but it's part of life. There are many variables that contribute toward the decision of pay. Have payroll policies changed in the company since you were hired? Perhaps they have a different degree, or higher certifications that came into play? The individual in charge of hiring this person may not have had your salary in mind at the time, known there was a disparity, or cared.

This is why discussing salaries is so taboo.

          I can't Spanish either.

I'm interviewing for a better job tomorrow morning, that's what I'm doing.

Sales is a tad different, but I've been on a kick for the last few months to hammer home the fact that I'm bringing in $X a year in revenue every time we have a commission and/or attainment discussion, and every time I get "I know, I'll see what I can do." At the end of the day your and my only recourse is to leave, if they don't want to make it right. It sucks 'cause I love my team and my clients, and would rather stay on, but they're forcing my hand.

I always love the "two week talk" when you turn in your resignation letter.

"Just give me two weeks to make it right, I didn't know you were so unhappy you'd leave!".

It's like they don't remember you ever bringing it up and they are completely blind sided when you finally decide enough is enough.

I only found out because my immediate superior found out, and the no experience person makes more than he does, too. Which he blabbed about to everyone because he didn't know how to handle his shit....

I can honestly say that if I were getting compensated for the market, I wouldn't have even submitted my resume for this new gig. My old TVP told me that part of the reason she decided to retire when she did was how unresponsive upper management was to her requests to get my salary fixed. They've totally lost me from any kind of loyalty aspect, which is a kick in the gut, considering the 14 years I've been there. Even on the sales side we're nothing but a number, and less pay means more profit, fuck that.

Even if I don't get this gig tomorrow, my eyes are now wide open, looking for the next episode. My point to you OP, is that they won't pay you more "just because." Either stay comfortable with your pay, like you were before you found out about the coworker, or freshen up that resume.

Being a peon has nothing to do with being peed on.

A part time pee on makes more than you do in a management position with 4 years experience!? Then you're well underpaid, time for a big raise, or a new job. I'd probably go ahead and find the new job, then give the current boss the ultimatum.

I'd be motivated to learn how to Spanish or find another job. That's all.

Do this. Now that you know what a peon that is bilingual makes, should you want to increase your salary you now know how.

I understand it can be a pain in the ass but all it takes is an hour a day and some motivation. Think of it as a long term investment.
