  • Opinions on buying a used car from Carmax

What are your thoughts on buying a car from Carmax? The warranty is what almost has me sold. Just looking for some more insight before I pull the trigger on anything.

If that price is truly "no haggle" then they're overpriced as fuck from what I've seen.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

They are indeed no haggle and are a bit on the high side, no doubt. That being said, I had a decent buying experience there, even if it took me 3 years to not be upside down. Live and learn. I wouldn't do it again.

They have an interesting buisness model. I sell to the recon center in Austin, and am somewhat familiar with thier operation in there. They really do go over the cars with a fine tooth comb to try to find and fix whatever is not good/right/working.

I shopped them recently for a car I was price checking. They are higher $$ for sure, they do check the cars pretty well from what I have heard. They offer a really good warranty if you want to pony up the $$.

They are higher priced, but I've sold to them as well. They give top dollar for vehicles that are easily marketable... shit prices for anything a little too old or high on mileage.

Yep. If I'm going to sell a vehicle, I'll take it up there first. It'll give me a good low-side baseline and tell me all the issues to fix.

I'm supposed to go up there and look this Saturday. At the very least I guess it will tell me the high side of the vehicles that I will potentially like. Hopefully they are on board with me machine gun test driving a long list of cars. I have no idea what I'm even looking for beyond it needing to get good mileage. The little kid in me wants to find an LS1 and make it mine...but that makes the 30 year old me look/feel like an irresponsible asshat.

Get a G8 GT and appease both age groups.

They are way over priced. Unless it's a car that is no longer in production and you really want it, look else where or even new if he car isn't that old.

I am buying back my company truck and going to sell it to buy a gas mileage car. I took it up there this week to get a quote. they quoted me 23k for it and KBB is $27.5 trade in on it. I am going to sell it outright but was surprised they were that much lower...I expected 25 or 26. the car I"m looking at they had for 18,900 and I found it on CL and other sites for 18k so its not too far off

I've purchased one and sold them three. I'd say they are considerably better than most used car lots. Sure if you want a used Toyota you should shop for Toyota certified and so on with the other makes.

My niece bought an RX330 from them a few years ago though and they clearly did a bad buy on it. The core support and radiator still had part tags on them, the headlamps were aftermarket and the clearcoat had fingerprints in it a few places. Not good for something with a clean Carfax! Other than the clear it looked like decent work but she paid a premium for a used Lexus. They took it back no problem though.

The car I bought was a 2006 Corvette. It was pretty much in perfect condition other than the normal C6 problems. The targa top rattled and they didn't service the differential so the clutches were clunky. Those aren't really Carmax's fault though. I drove it for a year and they gave me $1500 less than I paid for it.
