While that's true, staying on property does make things much more efficient. It's a bummer to take a big bite out of your day to travel elsewhere.

If you want the nice sit down places you'll need reservations, besides that you don't need them. The traffic varies a lot from week to week so sometimes you can get lucky.

If you want any kind of character dining experience you pretty much have to make reservations and in some cases 90 days out. There are plenty of other options though.

Every different themed area will usually have a nice sit down type place and a fast food option.

Since it sounds like your going to be in Orlando, be sure and hit up the Kennedy Space Center. My jew ass was bitching about the $55.00 entry fee, when we got done touring I would have paid double. If you go, be sure and get there when they open its an all day affair if not your ticket is good for two days...

Oh absolutely it's more efficient to stay on-property, they provide all of the transportation. It really doesn't take *that* much time to leave the bubble, around 30m to get far outside of it. Talk to the locals (not someone that works for Disney, because they're instructed to send you to Disney locations) to get an idea of where to go that isn't in the tourist trap. We found a couple of places that were really excellent that way.

Side note: I wish our public transportation system was as good as Disney's.

Yeah that all makes sense. We didn't want to dick with a rental, and damn sure didn't want to dick with driving all the way through the Mississippi/Alabama/Georgia suck hole.
