Get a hound from a shelter, for sure, IMO. All of my dogs have come from a shelter and they've all been awesome.

I would also wait a week or so before diving in to find a new pup.

Couldn't have said it better. Take your time & check out several dogs when you get to whatever shelter you choose to deal with. It's not so much a matter of you finding the right dog, but the right dog will find you. Trust me on this one...

Yeah, I found my pup (from a rescue) on petfinder. Had to drive to Terrell to get him, but he's been more than worth it.

Labs are great dogs, I've had many over the years. They are a handful the first year and a half. They have a lot of energy, chew a lot, and tend to jump on people (in a friendly way) and generally not listen that well. After that, they're fantastic. My experience is black labs are worse than the others when they're young. Adopting an older dog would be something to consider. Good luck, I think your family is making a good choice.

Rottweilers are the same damned way, but I wouldn't have any other dog. Soap, try First Monday out in Canton, that's where I have gotten my last two rotties.
