That is much more admirable than people who order delivery and don't tip because "fuck you".

The wife and I ventured out to Chili's last Friday evening. They were operating on a skeleton crew, and actually pretty busy too. The girl that waited on us was covering way more tables than she should've been, and still doing a damned good job IMO. There were some young punks (highschool age) sitting in the same section that were being a bit shitty to her, though. As much as I would've liked to say something to them, I just played it cool. We noticed that they got up and left pretty quick too...and it was a sigh of relief for us and the few other tables around them.

Well - a short time later, the waitress comes by and asks if we need more beers, but we could tell she was visibly shaken...looked as though she'd been crying. She had been real upbeat, polite, talkative, etc. before. My wife asked her if everything was okay - turns out those dicks asked her to not only get them several to-go boxes, but also asked her to box up their leftover shit. Apparently also wanted to-go cups for their drinks...when she was in the back getting it all together they took off and walked the check! She said when that happens the wait staff has to pay for it - so she was stuck with their bill, and of course not getting any tip for that table either.

I paid our bill on my debit card and tipped her 25%, and my wife handed her a $50 bill on the way out, to help with the loss. We thought it was the right thing to do...and at first she didn't want to take it, but reluctantly did - and started boo-hoo'ing again.

I still do not understand places with this policy. It should not be allowed, IMO. Call the police and file a report then write it off.

One time, I didn't have enough money to leave a tip. So I promised the waitress that I would give her half of my lottery winnings if I won.

The Chili's I worked wasn't like that ... manager just wrote off the tab. Sometimes servers say that after it happens for the sympathy tip from others. My wife had a 2nd job waiting at the VCC her first year out of undergrad and said it actually did come out of their pocket.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

I agree - it's total bullshit that the manager wouldn't cover something like that. I've had other people tell me the same thing, though. I guess it depends on the place and who's managing it. I'm sure in some cases they do, and this certainly should have been one of those times.

I suppose either way we'll get the good karma forward-payment, but if she was angling for it, then she'll have the bad karma forward-payment. Maybe that's why she didn't want to take the extra $50.

The Chili's I worked at was the same way.
