  • Can I paint this tool box?

So, I bought a low profile tool box (used), scuffed it up, and laid down an oil based paint. This was a terrible result, and it only got worse. I tried stripping that off, which became messy, so I took it to get blasted, and they warped the crud out of it, and the business owner became belligerent and aggressive when I pointed out the flaws. It looks less like a tool box and more like a potato. Have to scrap that, can't run around with that memory strapped to the bed of my truck.

    New box.

This box is black, a new Husky from Home Depot.

I bought a "Behr premium plus ultra", an exterior latex in a color that matches the pueblo colored rails on my KR truck. I don't want to make the same mistakes twice.

Can I scuff my box and expect this paint to lay down and stick?

Stop buying crap Husky toolboxes. The stuff at Harbor Freight is much better and actually costs less.

I can't find anything at HF that looks like what I bought

Style and price point are what drove my purchase on this, not vendor or name brand.

      I'm asking about paint.

        Gotcha.

Honestly not sure about latex, but the right way to paint it would be to have it media blasted and powder coated. If you insist on painting, I think you would be better off using Rust-Oleum.

Why don't you go with either powder coat or do like I did and scuff it up a bit and shoot it with primer and some Walmart paint? It's going to get marked up and you can do touch ups cheap

Color match is my issue, and value fundamentals. I'm already $240 down the hole on the first box, $320 in to this box. Not trying to end up with a $1000 tool box/lesson.

I don't have a HVLP gun, but if I did, I would get a single stage mixed up to match and lay that down. It doesn't need a clear coat; the rail covers I'm matching are textured plastic.

People paint entire cars with house paint. I'm trying to paint a tool box. I don't care if it's paint designed to go on the Shuttle Explorer, but then we get back to cost.

But if you're worried about cost, wouldn't it be less expensive to do it the fewest amount of times?

I agree. I spend that much on the stupid quarts of house paint. Guess I'll get a single stage mixed up at the paint house.

You can probably scuff it and use a adhesive promoter .

Cheap auto paint is the way to go. A 3M red scuff pad, wax & grease remover, tack cloth and your good to go.

House paint is a bad idea as is anything brushed on for that geometry. You can get some great results with rattlecan...have you checked online for a match?
