  • Looking at GPS tracking for a vehicle. Anybody use one?

Unfortunately we're getting concerned about my moms memory. She's still driving ok but we want to be able to track her just in case she gets lost. I was looking at the tracker from AWARE that just plugs into the OBDII port. http://www.awaregps.com

Has anyone used AWARE, or any others? It needs to have apps for android and IOS, track real time, plug in though the OBD port, and not cost a fortune monthly. Any info is much appreciated.

I have not but it looks cool for someone that won't yank it out to disappear. Says it tracks driving habits such as speeding etc. I would have one hell of a graph for them

Sorry I don't have much to offer on the original question but I'd highly consider getting tracking on her phone as well. Tracking won't do much good if she leaves the vehicle anywhere. Sure the same goes if she leaves her phone somewhere but every tid bit helps.

just google it you can get em on ebay for about $65 bucks with a little computer program to track them

Also it doesn't really sound like this person should be driving. Time to take the keys and sell the car

I added this to my Dad's car and it worked out great. We were actually able to talk to him via the OnStar when he got lost once and told him to stay put.

Once they are starting to have issues its time to get the keys. My dad would leave from Tyler to go see friends in Dallas and just keep merging on to freeways since all his landmarks had changed. After we found him the second time (once in Arkansas, 2nd in Fair Park) I got his keys and sold the car. He questioned it for about two weeks and then forgot he had a car.

If you both have newish iphones, you can check their location any time you want. All you have to do is turn on the "share location" function in the text message details and you have an instant GPS location (at least the location of the phone) at any given time.

I don't know if the other platforms do this so YMMV.

I have "Where's My Droid" app on my wife's phone. I send her a keyword in a TEXT and it tells me her GPS coordinate and Google Maps link if it can determine a street address. I used it on a recent roadtrip of hers to inform her she went 50 miles off course.

There's also the Location function in Google+, if it's on the smart phone. The down side to it is it doesn't refresh that often.

Her situation isnt anywhere near that bad yet. She can get where she wants to go just fine for the most part. If she has any issue the first thing she does is pull over and call one of us. And thats only happened once or twice in the last year. From what I can tell shell say " Im going to HEB" and shell get there just fine. But she wont remember what shes there to get. So shell be there for a few hours as she slowly remembers the things. Then shell get home and remember that she had a list in her purse. Im not worried about her going completely out of town or anything like that.

She still has a flip phone right now but im going to setup my old galaxy s3 so that itll be easy for her to use. And I plan on tracking it also.

The tracking, at this point in time, is more precautionary than reactionary.

We have a Viper unit installed on Lea's son's Mustang. We can get location, speed and heading at any time. We can also get text alerts for various things (speed above x-mph, travel outside of a certain radius, vehicle moving during certain hours).

Besides cost of the unit and install, there is an annual subscription fee. Not a lot, like $100 or so.

We got ours from EW (on here) at Bedford Autosound.

Also, you can add lock, unlock, trunk, starter kill etc that can be controlled from phone.

Exactly which Viper system are you guys talking about? All the Vipers I'm finding are much more expensive.
