(ANTIMEDIA) MIAMI GARDENS, FL- Miami Gardens police are under fire after shooting and killing Lavall Hall, a 25-year-old schizophrenic man early Sunday morning. His mother called police for assistance in calming his aggressive mood, but after he ignored verbal orders, they proceeded to shoot him multiple times. He was holding a broom, which police say he used as a weapon. Catherine Daniels called the police around 5 A.M. on Sunday morning. She says
“, ‘My son has got a mental problem. Please send somebody here to help him.’”
Police say they were called to deal with a
    “violent, mentally disturbed male subject.”
When they arrived, family members say Hall ignored police orders and took off running about a block from the house. Police and witnesses say police ran after him and twice attempted to use a stun gun to subdue him. That didn’t work. According to the police statement, Hall had “an object” that he used against them and

“as a result, the individual was shot and subsequently died on the scene.”
Catherine Hall and other witnesses said Hall was carrying an old broom. As his mother lamented,
“You tell them that the child is mentally challenged, and then all of a sudden you run out to him…You know he doesn’t have a gun. He had a broom, a red broom with straws. Old, red broom.”
Nevertheless, a neighbor said she heard:
“ ‘Get on the ground, get on the ground,’ and then shortly after I hear ‘boom,’ I mean, ‘pow, pow, pow.'”
After five shots, Hall was dead and police placed him in handcuffs as he lay motionless on the ground. Police then turned their guns on Hall’s step-mother, who ran to the scene when she heard the gun shots.
“He his gun and told us to get back or he’ll shoot us…my hands went up.”
Miami Gardens Police say that three officers were injured in the altercation and the one who killed Hall was taken to the hospital. Still, Walter Pinkies, Hall’s cousin, believes
“They could have dealt with that on another level…You didn’t have to shoot nobody to calm nobody down.”
Catherine Hall is distraught over the death of her son, saying
“If I they going to kill my child, I would have never, ever called them.”
    She continued,
“He a mental problem and when I went around the corner to help my child all had to do was take my child because he got a mental problem…they killed my child, took my child away from me.”
    Another grieving relative said,
“ didn’t call the police to say, ‘Kill my son.’ She called the police to say, ‘My son has a mental issue. Come help him.'”
There is growing concern that police are inadequately trained to deal with mentally ill individuals. This has led to an unfortunate and increasing number of deaths (though this doesn’t explain the plethora of police murders of mentally stable people). The question is not whether or not violence is acceptable, even from the mentally ill, but whether or not cops are justified in using lethal violence against those they know are disturbed. Hall leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter (another report says she is 9) while the officer who shot him is on paid leave. As Pinkins said,
“When they left they went home to their family…They probably home eating, drinking, having a good time. But we back here grieving. That’s not fair.”

I'm sorry, but it's not the cops job to help her contain her mentally ill kid.
Maybe shooting him was unjustified, but really, call the cops because you can't control him and expect them to do what exactly???

Am I wrong for being more "meh?" after reading the mouth-breather quotes from the family members?

Never call the cops to your home unless you have the proper ambush in place.

Nope. I'm sure they're more pissed about a smaller government check than losing a family member.

This dude used a broom to start a fight with cops.

That seems like a good way to get shot dead in your own side yard. Let this be a lesson for all the wannabe badass retards out there.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) -- A heartbroken South Florida family is demanding answers as they came together Monday night to remember a loved one fatally gunned down during an altercation with Miami Gardens Police.

Friends and family of Lavall Hall lit candles and walked the short distance from his Miami Gardens home, located near Northwest 191st Street and Third Avenue, to the spot where he was shot by officers early Sunday morning. They told 7News they wanted to express their despair for the 25-year-old's death by retracing his footsteps moments before he died.

"We want justice! We want justice!" the marchers chanted in unison over and over as they made their way to the spot where, police said, he confronted police, just after 5 a.m. Hall's family said he suffered from schizophrenia, and when he began pacing outside in the cold wearing only his underwear and a T-shirt, his mother, Catherine Daniels, just wanted help to get him back inside, so she called 911.

"When the police came, I said, 'Please, help me with my child. Take him to the hospital,'" said Daniels as she was surrounded by relatives at the vigil.

Around the corner from the home, however, a confrontation between Hall and two Miami Gardens Police officers turned deadly. Investigators said Hall did not cooperate and engaged in a physical altercation with the law enforcers using an object, forcing them to shoot.

"I heard somebody telling him to stop, 'Don't move,'" said area resident Michelle Robinson.

"Bam bam! We took off running," said a man who claims he heard the gunshots.

A few residents ventured out to see what had happened. A woman who lives nearby said she got a good look at what Hall was holding. "He had a broom, a red broom with straws. Old, red broom," said Regina.

Miami Gardens Police said they are conducting an investigation on the shooting. On Sunday, the department issued a statement which reads in part, "The loss of any life is tragic and understandably difficult. We are investigating the incident and will provide an additional statement as more facts become available. This investigation will be transparent and thorough. Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved."

Monday night, candles and a stuffed monkey marked the spot where Hall passed away. His family said he had been in and out of hospitals and had been recently Baker Acted. Each time, they said, an officer had been able to calm the situation.

Daniels said she wants to know why Hall's interaction with police had such a tragic outcome this time. "They had not called me and tell me anything, homicide, Miami Gardens," she said. "I am still grieving on why they killed my son."

Hall leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter. His family said they believe there is a disconnect in the way local law enforcement deals with people with mental illness, and they hope that this can be remedied.

Miami Gardens Police have not commented on the shooting beyond the statement they issued. As is routine in cases like these, usually officers are placed on administrative leave.

One officer was taken to the hospital as a result of the altercation and treated for cuts and bruises.
I couldn't help but laugh at the stuffed monkey part.

The Baker Act is a law that allows you to be institutionalized against your will if the courts think you're dangerously mentally ill. The real question is, why was this dude at home to begin with?
When the government pays, the government controls.
