  • Wow Japan - Unit 731

Unit 731 (Japanese: 731部隊 Hepburn: Nana-san-ichi Butai?) was a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experimentation during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) of World War II. It was responsible for some of the most notorious war crimes carried out by Japanese personnel. Unit 731 was based at the Pingfang district of Harbin, the largest city in the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo (now Northeast China).

It was officially known as the Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department of the Kwantung Army (関東軍防疫給水部本部 Kantōgun Bōeki Kyūsuibu Honbu?). Originally set up under the Kempeitai military police of the Empire of Japan, Unit 731 was taken over and commanded until the end of the war by General Shiro Ishii, an officer in the Kwantung Army. The facility itself was built between 1934 and 1939 and officially adopted the name "Unit 731" in 1941.

Between 3,000 and 12,000 men, women, and children[1][2]—from which around 600 every year were provided by the Kempeitai[3]—died during the human experimentation conducted by Unit 731 at the camp based in Pingfang alone, which does not include victims from other medical experimentation sites.[4] Almost 70% of the victims who died in the Pingfang camp were Chinese, including both civilian and military.[5] Close to 30% of the victims were Russian.[6] Some others were South East Asians and Pacific Islanders, at the time colonies of the Empire of Japan, and a small number of Allied prisoners of war.[7] The unit received generous support from the Japanese government up to the end of the war in 1945.

Many of the researchers involved in Unit 731 went on to prominent careers in post-war politics, academia, business, and medicine. Some were arrested by Soviet forces and tried at the Khabarovsk War Crime Trials in 1949; most remained under American Forces occupation. These researchers were not tried for war crimes by the Americans so that the information and experience gained in bio-weapons could be co-opted into the U.S. biological warfare program.[8] On 6 May 1947, Douglas MacArthur, as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, wrote to Washington that "additional data, possibly some statements from Ishii probably can be obtained by informing Japanese involved that information will be retained in intelligence channels and will not be employed as 'War Crimes' evidence."[9] The immunity deal concluded in 1948.

Some pretty horrifying experiments went on at 731 back then... they (Japanese) later destroyed as much of the 731 facility as possible to keep anyone from finding out the extent of the atrocities.

They referred to the prisoners as "matura" which means log. "Yoshi, bring me another log to disect please."

          Scary place for sure.

The Japanese used to have a trade mark level of sadism until we fire bombed their cities and topped that off by nuking them; twice. It took that much to convince them that they are pacifist. We hit them so hard that it even made their dicks smaller.

Also, we even beat the Nazis to eugenics!

Still was a hardcore military support to stay and fight, if the emperor didn't give up we would have invaded eventually.

There is some bad stuff in our history. I am just glad that eugenics in the US never gained the support that it did in Germany. The crazy part is how many prominent individuals from that time like Alexander Gram Bell and Henry Ford supported eugenics.

We didn't just beat the Nazis to eugenics; we are the ones that laid the foundational principles that gave rise to Naziism.

I also have to point out that there are some truths in eugenics and that it was only discredited because of Naziisms ties to it.

I never understood the reason for the Tuskegee syphilis experiment. What did it accomplish?

No invasion would have been needed it we had chosen a tactic of nuking them as fast are we could build the bombs and starved them to death via a blockaded & siege. I believe that if we invaded them it would have just been because we wanted to kill them in person.

If you think there was truth to anything in eugenics you are a racist and hate filled idiot. Eugenics was 100% geared toward getting rid of people who were thought to be racially or genetically inferior and had absolutely nothing to do with health or science.

That is the PC thing for you to say.

Is it your assertion that all traits are not inherited?

Have you even read the book that started the eugenics movement? It is not what you think it is. If you are an avid reader you will notice a recent trend in academia shifting back to eugenics while leaving behind the racist aspects of it.
